Chappie tops this week’s box office, fails to shatter numbers
Hugh Jackman‘s new film Chappie came in number one with a low $13.3 million. The sci-fi thriller, which is directed by District 9 maker Neill Blomkamp, earned a mere $13.3 million in its debut at American theaters. Chappie follows a police robot that develops emotions after it is stolen by criminals who intend to use the machine to break the law.

Chappie was made with an estimated budget of $49 million and it stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. So far Chappie has earned $27 million internationally since its release. ‘Focus’ starring Will Smith came in at number two with $10 million, bringing its domestic total to $34.6 million. Fifty Shades of Grey dropped to number six with $5.6 million and a cumulative gross of $156.4 million in its fourth weekend.
