Director Jon Favreau recently revealed that he will be helming a live-action version of the 1994 animated film The Lion King. His last directorial, ‘The Jungle Book’, was also a live-action version of the classic Mowgli tale. For the project, his team used some virtual reality technology and this time, according to the director, the team will be using a lot more of it.

Talking about the technology, Jon shared, “A lot of the simulcam and motion capture technology that we use here, a lot of it was innovated around the making of ‘Avatar,’ and hasn’t really changed much, because there’s just not a lot of consumers”. He further explained that virtual reality tech is growing much faster than other effects because there is a strong consumer base for it. The Iron Man director also shared that he was working on a VR project called ‘Gnomes and Goblins’ which lead him to a start-up where he watched The Blue; a virtual-reality blue whale encounter.

Jon feels that this can bring a lot of opportunities for filmmakers, which can be used in traditional live-action theatrical work as well. He also praised game engines like Unity and Unreal as they “offer you a lot of opportunities to build upon that engine”. It was amazing to see what Jon could do with little use of VR in ‘The Jungle Book’ which raises the bar, quite high, for his upcoming ‘Lion King’ flick.
