She told the media at the Edison Ballroom, “I’m glad to see some old friends and celebrate this wonderful theater -- it’s a home for new playwrights, writers, musicians, it’s a rare sort of conservatory for new talent and ideas.” Streep started her acting career with this theatre after graduating from Yale School of Drama. Streep spent the entire evening greeting all the guests and posing for the shutterbugs.
The ceremony began with speeches and scene re-enactments from Streep’s ‘70s productions like Dead and Never Call Me Mother and Uncommon Women and Others. Frozen composers Robert Lopez and Kristen-Anderson Lopez performed an adaptation of their Disney song Love Is an Open Door depicting Streep’s career. Other theatre and film personalities like Judith Light, Tony Kushner and John Patrick Stanley recalled their fond memories with Streep. When Streep got on the stage to receive the award she said in her speech, “I feel like I’m at the funeral, so I’m really happy! You usually don’t get to be there.”
