Ever since the announcement of Deadpool 2, there has been speculation about who might be cast as Ryan Reynolds side kick, Cable. Several names have been tossed around when speaking of the character including Pierce Brosnan, Stephen Lang, David Harbour and Russell Crowe. Now, according to reports, Man of Steel actor Michael Shannon may be the front runner for the role.

Deadpool, which released in February last year, became a super hit at the box office. The movie about the unconventional anti-hero gained a lot of appreciation because of the several fourth wall breaking scenes where Deadpool, looking at the camera, talks directly to the audience. In the post credit scene of the film, the Merc with the Mouth says that they will be casting Cable for the sequel and also mentions a few names which include Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren and Keira Knightley (because “she’s got range”). While the reports about Michael Shannon being cast for the role might be surprising, he certainly looks befitting for the part.

Cable is an older character who plays Deadpool’s partner in the comics. He is a big, hulking character and given Shannon’s height – 6’3” – he would be apt to play the character. The two-time Oscar nominee was last seen in ‘Nocturnal Animals’ which came out in October last year.

Deadpool 2 is expected to hit theatres next year with David Leitch attached as director.
