It has been confirmed that David Fincher is not directing ‘The Girl in the Spider's Web’, and Rooney Mara will not be returning as Lisbeth Salander, either. However, Sony does have some potential replacements in mind. Actresses Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are being tipped for playing Lisbeth Salander in 'The Girl in the Spider's Web, which is a sequel of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'.

During a chat with the USA Today, Alvarez told, "We've got a great script and now comes the most fun part – finding our Lisbeth." 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' featured Rooney Mara as tattoed hacker Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist. However, this sequel features a brand new cast. Natalie, Scarlett and Alicia Vikander are among the names being tipped to essay the role of tattooed hacker in the forthcoming sequel.

Adapted from David Lagercrantz's novel of the same name, 'The Girl in the Spider's Web' is set for fall debut next year. The film is co-written by Alvarez alongside Steven Knight and Jay Basu and will be helmed by 'Don't Breathe' director Fede Alvarez. However, the next two books in Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy are being skipped, and hence the Stieg is straightaway jumping to the fourth instalment.
