Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, The Secret Life Of Pets has become the latest successful animal movie this year, opening to a massive £103.2 million (£79.7 million) in the US. The movie featuring the voices of Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Steve Coogan, Louis CK and Ellie Kemper, follows the success of Zootopia and Finding Dory. The Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures film cost only $75 million (£57.9 million) to produce.

"If any pets were wondering what their owners were doing this weekend, they were seeing this movie," says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, adding that Secret Life "overperformed massively," thanks to a great title and an irresistible concept. "This proves if you have a truly original idea — not a sequel, not a franchise, not something already known — that you can still create a massive hit."

Remaining at number-two for a second week in a row was The Legend of Tarzan from Warner Bros. Pictures. The film earned an additional $22M this weekend, remaining in 3,591 locations. Now in its second week, the film has grossed over $81.4M in the U.S. alone. The Legend of Tarzan was directed by David Yates, the screenplay was written by Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Rory J. Saper, Christian Stevens and Margot Robbie. Finding Dory was third, with $20.4 million in weekend sales and $422.6 million in domestic.

Rounding out the most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “The Purge: Election” ($11.7 million), “Central Intelligence” ($8.1 million), “Independence Day: Resurgence” ($7.7 million), “The BFG” ($7.6 million), “The Shallows” ($4.8 million) and “Sultan” (a foreign- language film opening at $2.2 million).
