The Wolverine: An overseas success but disappointing at the domestic box-office

Hugh Jackman’s The Wolverine was in a dominating position at the U.S. box-office over the weekend collecting a total of $55 million domestically which is quite interestingly quite lesser than what distributor Fox was aiming at. But The Wolverine proved quite successful in the international forum with a global total of $141 million in the first weekend.

The domestic $55 million haul could not even match up to the $85 million 3-day opening of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and it is said to be the lowest domestic opening in the 6-film franchise of X-Men. But its overseas success in 126 countries except Japan and China took in $86 million which has been the best international opening for any X-Men movie ever. The global collection has also helped it exceed its $115 million production budget.

As The Wolverine is set in Japan it’s said to be doing well in entire Asia. Fox’s president of distribution Chris Aronson said, “Hugh (Jackman) and (director) James Mangold delivered a terrific movie and the way it was received globally was really spectacular. We’re looking forward to the next couple of weeks because we know it’s going to play well.” In the box-office report Jackman’s The Wolverine has been followed by The Conjuring, Despicable Me 2, Turbo, Grown Ups 2 and Red 2, respectively.
