Word of mouth magic – American Sniper becomes the highest grosser of 2014

American Sniper has officially become the top grossing movie released in 2014. American Sniper has grossed $337.2 million domestically since opening in limited release late last December. That gross puts it ahead of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, which made $336.8 million. American Sniper is also the highest grossing film of Eastwood’s career and Bradley Cooper‘s highest-grossing domestic release.

American Sniper directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, opened in four theaters Dec. 26 and expanded to 3,555 Jan. 16. It continued to spend three consecutive weeks at No. 1 and didn’t leave the box office top 10 until this weekend, its 11th week in theaters. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 also spent three consecutive weeks on top of the box office after it opened Nov. 21 and has made an estimated $337 million total. But even if American Sniper continues to perform well, it won’t be able to top the highest grossing movie of 2013, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which ended its run with a remarkable $424.7 million.
