6 Bollywood Movies With A Budget Of 100 Crore Or More That Turned Out To Be Flops

Big stars, luxurious locations, stylish action sequences, gorgeous wardrobes and flashy cars- big budget movies have always been a sure shot at success at the box office. But with the changing palate of cine-goers, this formula also stands challenged. Whether it is the script, performances, clash with another big movie, piracy or high production cost or a combination of all, there are instances when a supposedly 'big' movie has struggled to recover the production cost.

Here are 6 films that had a budget of 100 crores or more, but turned out to be flops:

Tubelight

The entire hoopla around Salman Khan’s big Eid release this year was totally shattered by the disappointing performance of Tubelight in June 2017. The film was made at a budget of 135 crores and only managed to gather 114 crores at the box office and turned out to one of the worst movies Salman has been a part of. The actor also had to return money to the distributors for the film's failure.

Jagga Jasoos

After Kites, this was the second time Anurag Basu's dream project suffered a fatal blow. The film took almost 3 years and about 131 crores to make but literally struggled to make even 50 crores at the box office. The total collection of the film stopped at 53 crores mark. One of the most awaited films, this movie is till now the biggest disappointment of 2017, which has, by far, been the worst year for Bollywood in a very long time.

Jab Harry Met Sejal

Even Shah Rukh Khan could not break the jinx of 2017. Keeping up with the string of disappointing to movies, Jab Harry Met Sejal which was made on a budget of 119 crores could only earn about 61 crores at the box office. The super hit pairing of Shah Rukh and Anushka, and master director Imtiaz Ali came up with a product that looked like an extremely half-hearted effort and as a result, both critics and audience did not care much about the movie.

Mohenjo Daro 

Made on a budget of 115 crores with 15 crores spent just on promotions, it looked like a safe bet given the star power of Hrithik Roshan and Ashutosh Gowariker's cinematic brilliance. However, sloppy screenplay and inaccurate historical research reduced the film to a mockery. Riding on the popularity of   Hrithik Roshan the film somehow touched the 100 crore mark in the worldwide collection, but given the high production cost it turned out to lose money instead, making it a financial failure. Apart from that, the film also failed to impress the critics or audiences.

Blue

The oldest movie on the list, Blue spent 129 crores on some really cool underwater sequences, slick action and an extended shooting schedule in the Bahamas. However, none of it could save this from drowning at the box office. Even the star power of Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar in scuba suits could not keep the movie afloat. The movie made 72.5 crores at the box office which measly compared to the 129 crores budget.  Maybe next time you invest almost 130 crores in a movie get a better story and a screenplay writer and lose Zayed Khan from the project.

Raavan

Mani Ratnam ambitious project Raavan, although loved by cinephiles, failed to create a buzz at the box office. The Aishwarya-Abhishek starrer had an epic storyline, good performances, and a picturesque setting, but it lacked a certain mass appeal which led to its failure. Made on a budget of 100 crores the film could only recover about 35 crores which meant a gruesome financial loss of about 65 crores. While some of the loss was taken care of by satellite rights, but the film was far from a financial success.

Bombay Velvet

Bombay Velvet or Anurag Kashyap's biggest disappointment became a new milestone of flops in the Bollywood last year. Having a fresh pairing of Ranbir and Anushka, Karan Johar's acting debut, swanky retro setting, nothing worked in the favor of this shoddy crime-drama. Made with a total budget of about 120 crores, the film recovered only about 32 crores in the box office collections. The film neither receive critical appreciation nor did the audience love it. This was one disaster everybody associated to the film would like to forget ASAP.
