Karan Johar's On Fire As Dharma Productions Gears Up For Over Half A Dozen Films

2017 was a largely good year for Dharma Productions as Baahubali 2 entered the record books, Badrinath Ki Dulhania emerged as a rare success in the first half of the year while Ittefaq emerged profitable as well.

Now Karan Johar is pretty much looking at a massive 2018-19 ahead, what with multiple films in different stages of production. Let's take a look:

Drive - 2nd March 2018

This would be Karan Johar's first release of 2018 and would be arriving in the same season that Badrinath Ki Dulhania did earlier this year. The film marks the comeback of Tarun Masnukhani as a director pretty much a decade after Dostana [2008]. An action thriller, the film sees the coming together of Sushant Singh Rajput and Jacqueline Fernandez. Not much has been revealed around the film so far but rest assured, this one should 'drive' home the moolah for the makers. Pun intended!

Raazi - 11th May 2018

 

This could well be another small-n-intimate film featuring Alia Bhatt , after Highway and Dear Zindagi. From Gauri Shinde to Meghna Gulzar , Alia's stint with female directors continues with Raazi which is expected to be an emotional drama. Also starring Vicky Kaushal and Jaideep Ahlawat , the film brings Alia together with her real life mother Soni Razdan . Plotline of the film has been kept under the wraps so far.

Dhadak - 6th July 2018

 

Remake of Marathi film Sairat , this one is set to be a romantic musical entertainer from the house of Dharma Productions. Featuring Jahnvi ( Sridevi 's daughter) and Ishaan ( Shahid Kapoor 's brother) in the principal roles, this one is directed by Shashank Khaitan [ Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania , Badrinath Ki Dulhania]. Sairat is the highest grossing Marathi film of all times and Dhadak would be aiming big as well.

Student of the Year 2 - Second half of 2018

 

Though the release date of the film is yet to be announced, it is a known fact that Student of the Year 2 would arrive sometime in the second half of the year. Punit Malhotra, who made his successful debut with I Hate Luv Storys and then saw a major flop in the film of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein would be looking at making things right with this second in the franchise. Tiger Shroff , due to his popularity with the young ones, is just the right 'student' for the film. One eagerly waits to know if there would be others joining the show as well, and who would eventually be the leading lady in the film.

Simmba - 28th December 2018

 

Now one looks a smashing combination for sure. With Rohit Shetty directing Ranveer Singh in a cop action-drama entertainer that promises dollops of humor and Karan Johar backing it all up, Simmba is already turning out to be a hot property even though a year remains for its release. Moreover, an early announcement date has also ensured that there is no clash situation developing between Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan since the film has avoided collision with the Aanand L. Rai flick (slated for 21st December release already). Moreover, there is no other film that was announced for 28th December either.

Kesari - Holi 2019

 

Holi 2019 falls on 21st March and this is when Kesari is being planned for release. The film sees the coming together of Karan Johar with Akshay Kumar for an epic affair that is base on The Battle of Saragarhi. The film would be directed by Anurag Singh who has been a popular name in Punjabi cinema. A biggie by all means, the film is slated to go on floors in early 2018. With powerhouses like Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar coming together, rest assured Kesari would be one of the most talked about films in months to come.

Brahmastra - 15th August 2019

 

From Dragon to Brahmastra, it has been quite some journey for the biggest film ever to be planned at Dharma Productions. Director Ayan Mukherjee has waited for long since the Blockbuster success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani . Now that he is reuniting with Ranbir Kapoor for the third time (first being Wake Up Sid ), all eyes are how he has conceptualized Brahmastra which belongs to the superhero genre that is possibly also a fusion between mythology and contemporary sci-fi. With Alia Bhatt in the fold as well, Brahmastra is already being planned as a trilogy.
