MAMI Movie Mela: Guess How Much Money Are Bollywood Celebs Charging To Attend The Event?
Mumbai Film Festival is bringing a completely unique opportunity for Bollywood buffs and cinema lovers which we rarely see in India. MAMI is hosting a movie mela on the 7th of October 2017 where fans can register and watch their favourite celebs answer questions that they want to hear. Desimartini spoke to the brains behind this absolutely thrilling concept of having a fan based mela. Eminent film critic Rajeev Masand and MAMI festival head Anupama Chopra spilled the beans on the most entertaining movie mela of the year. Here are a few excerpts from the conversation.
Mumbai Film Festival is almost like the Jaipur Litfest & Comic Con of popular cinema
Rajeev said, “I think in another festival in any other city may be you could ask why you’re mixing popular cinema with a film festival. The festival itself, wanting to do such kind of an event for a long time. Anupama called it the Jaipur Litfest of popular cinema and I call it the comic con of popular cinema. I feel there’s a lot that’s done for the press, film industry engages a lot with the press whether its a trailer launch event, party or screening The big peeping hole here is the big, direct kind of engagement with the audience, with the fans. You wanna talk to your audience directly!”
MAMI breaks the stereotype that film festivals are only for a certain kind of audience
Anupama Chopra explained how the MAMI Movie Mela came to life, “It’s a dream that Rajeev and I had for many years that someday we will create a comic con kind of thing. At one point Kaushik Roy who’s actually with Jio signed on and told us to marry that to the festival. Honestly the festival is inclusive. We want to break the perception that the festival is for certain kind of people.”
“The idea was to talk about the things that the fans would be interested in. I don’t think the fans want to hear…may be this is going to sound a little bit wrong but I think the fans are tired of the debate which are happening on prime time television all the time and fans want to talk about what they love. I don’t think they want to talk about the representation of a certain thing in the movies. Vidya will touch upon some of that in her panel discussion and she would talk about how female characters have changed, through her choice of favourite films. The idea was to bring something onboard that fans want to listen to and I don’t think fans want preaching,” Rajeev added.
Will the Movie Mela travel to other cities?
Rajeev Masand think that it would be probably bigger outside of Bombay and so does Anupama. They’re both more than happy to let fans interact with their favourite stars across the country, and not just Mumbai, where it’s actually easier to spot or run into a Bollywood star.
Bollywood Stars are contributing to MAMI Movie Mela and the festival for FREE!
While Bollywood stars are famous for charging whopping amount of money to attend any small event, this time celebs like Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan and renowned directors are coming to MAMI for free!
Rajeev, who is absolutely elated and overwhelmed at the same time by this gesture said, “I think stars are kind of aligning themselves with the vision that we have for the mela. They see the merit in engaging directly with the fans. They’ve absolutely done it out of sheer goodwill and kindness. And it’s very very rare!”
“All of the talent that’s participating in the mela are giving their time for free. Even hair make up! They’re donating their time to the Mumbai film festival,” Anupama said as she confirmed that none of the celebs have charged a penny to make this festival a big success.
Why should fans attend the MAMI Movie Mela?
Anupama added, “We love movies and so we want it to be a great celebration of our love for movies which is how this mela came to be. Not just the panels, there’s merchandising, food trucks and things that make this a movie carnival.”
The topic of panel discussions that Rajeev and Anupama have chosen are actually our daily dining table discussions and not some boring debates. “Vishal Shekhar make such wonderful music, so we want the world to know what goes inside their mind when they make it. It’s just stuff I want to know. We want to ask questions that fans want answers to,” Anupama explained as she established that the movie mela is the for the masala audience and cinema lovers where they can actually interact with celebs and get to know what they’re curious about.
The MAMI movie mela will have the team of Golmaal Again, Vidya Balan, Vishal-Shekhar, a panel of Bollywood’s renowned directors - Ayan Mukherjee, Nitesh Tiwari, Kabir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor in one single day!
