I'm all for a coming of age teen film aimed at women but sadly, the promos of Gippi never quite drew me in. Nonetheless, I ended up watching it & came out with the feeling that this overtly cliched, done-to-death concept might find takers in moms & aunts.
14-year old Gippi lives in Shimla with her mom & brother. She loves gyrating to Shammi Kapoor music & is a fat cute bundle of joy. She is comfortable in her own skin but is subject to a lot of flak from the mean kids & trust me, this film plays to every cliche in the book.
You have the hunk who stood her up, the sexy girl who everyone finds hot, the fight for being the head-girl & many such more.
While the film isnt too long, it tends to drag, maybe because its not a genre thats particularly my comfort zone as a viewer.
The music is quite weak & the styling is true blue Karan Johar style, cant go wrong.
The acting department is quite good. Vij is Gippi is fantastic & so is Divya Dutta is the mother.
Director Sonam Nair doesnt quite succeed owing to the lack of originality. There is nothing in this that hasnt already been seen in umpteen Hollywood teen comedies.
To sum it up, this is a good underdog story & will surely work for a huge section. For me, sadly it doesn't. I read a hilarious tweet recently that sums up this film in a nutshell, "The heroes from Student of the Year are the villians in Gippi!"
