If youre an ardent Salman Khan fan, you couldnt have asked for a better film. The two Khans, Salman and Kabir join hands for the first time to give an out-and-out action packed romantic thriller with finesse, style and substance. Far different from usual films, but with same amount of entertainment, Ek Tha Tiger presents Salman in a role tailor-made for him. Also to be seen in this film with the Tiger is his Tigress, Katrina Kaif, who thankfully is blessed with a role far better and different from her films in the past.

To enjoy Ek Tha Tiger to the fullest, you need to do the following

1. Pick the smallest theatre in your city/town
2. Make sure you keep your mobile in silent mode or switched off to save yourself from getting beaten up whilst watching the film.
3. Feel the craze for Salman Khan when his fans go crazy the minute he first appears on-screen. Join the fans in whistling, hooting and doing everything that they do in the cinema. Its super fun, trust me!
4. Dont you dare pass any comment against Salman! Hes Salman and moreover hes a RAW agent, which gives him the ticket to leap off tall buildings or stop a speeding train with a coat.
5. Finally, when you leave the theatre, youre sure to feel two things the buzzing background score in your head and unforgettable images of Katrinas stunning beauty.

I suppose Kabir Khan has some kind of fetish for terrorism as all his films thus far have dealt with terrorism or its aftereffects, including Ek Tha Tiger, which tells us the story in the lives of RAW and ISI agents of India and Pakistan. Salman Khan plays Tiger, one of the finest RAW agents of India. Tiger, as hes fondly called returns home from Iraq after a successful completion of a mission, only to learn that his next mission is in London. Hes expected to closely observe and follow a Professor whos suspected of leaking information about Indias anti-missile technology to ISI agents. Tiger meets Zoya, who works a part-time caretaker and falls head over heels for her. What happens between Tiger and Zoya forms the rest of the story?

In this RAW, ISI makes love in paradise story, you dont expect logic but only entertainment. The story takes us through some scintillating locales, by looking at which youll ask yourself, of all the places why should someone come here to make war but not love. The plot after a certain point becomes predictable and whats to follow becomes easy to anticipate. Although, Kabirs version of RAW v/s ISI story has plenty of action and equal amount of drama, youd definitely feel the film lacked the spirit to turn into one of the best thrillers of the recent past.

Fans of Salman and rest of the audiences alike will definitely enjoy the action in the film. Crisply shot and edited, the fight sequences are presented in style and appear plausible. The action is intelligently synced with some brilliantly executed chase sequences, shot atop of buildings, through narrow streets and crowded market places to add extra moments of Salmanism.

The first took half took off like a jet boat, at amazing pace but come to the second half, you feel a block in the flow of the story. Salman couldnt have given a better performance and thankfully you dont see him mouthing cheesy lines while Katrina gives one of her career best performances. The humor in the film is likeable and doesnt appear artificial. Especially, the initial moments between Salman and Katrina are truly enjoyable.

Kabir Khan may have just given the biggest hit of the year but this definitely doesnt qualify as the best film. His intentions were crystal clear he wanted to make a film thatll have Salman Khan written in every frame and he succeeded in that. Music by Sohail Sen is memorable but its the background score that stands out.

You dont review a Salman Khan film. You review the experience. Ironically the last Salman Khan film I really enjoyed was Dabangg which I saw in the same theatre as Ek Tha Tiger.

Ek Tha Tiger was a good fun experience. The most fun I had at a Salman Khan film since Dabangg.

What I write now is the experience and multiple thoughts that were hitting my senses while watching this film.

- The action is good but if the action is good then the credit should go to the action director and the stuntman. If you have a sharp eye you can actually see Salmans face stuck on the stunt guy at a lot of places. Oh, I miss my childhood days when I used to believe the hero does all the action.

- The best thing that impressed me about writer/director Kabir Khan is that he has written a heroines character which is at par with the hero. The heroine can save herself and also helps the hero in his fight sequences. Clap,clap,clap just for that

- Watching beautiful locations like Dublin, Istanbul and Cuba was such a relief from Salmans last two films where all we saw was a huge bungalow which is filled with a larger than life family that comes in all shapes and sizes.

- Story? Well who needs a story in a bhai film nowadays? but here there is one. Alas the story of RAW and ISI is so predictable and silly at places that for those two hours you might feel you are better than all the RAW and ISI agents shown in the film.

- The romance is well handled. The humor is nice and thankfully Salman and Katrina together on screen didnt give me nightmares of Yuvraaj.

- In fact I came out really impressed by Katrinas performance. Going by what Kabir Khan extracted from her I am much more confident of the Yash Chopra romance now.

- The entire take on the India Pak issue was quite amateur. Why did Kabir Khan with his experience in documentary filmmaking choose this canvas for a subject that deserved to be a film like Kabul Express?

- The climax was a little underwhelming. I expected some more fireworks to happen.

Word of Mouth Amidst cheers, claps and whistles watching Ek Tha Tiger in Chandan (an old single screen theatre in Mumbai) was like watching a cricket match with a bunch of friends.

Ek tha Tiger is one of those rare movies in which Salman does not try (or maybe tries and fails) to be himself. He plays a RAW agent who falls in love with an ISI agent and he takes himself very seriously indeed. Except for the songs where he does his trademarked 'hands fisted and legs twisted m'dance, for the rest of the movie he is awfully sincere. The fall out of this sincerity is that it takes us out of our comfort zone about him and leaves us a bit fuddled as to what to make of him in this movie.

The action is fast paced and there are some slick action scenes and moves especially by Katrina who shows how good she is at climbing in an exciting chase sequence. Essentially a love story, I felt the romance could have had more build up. Anyway, after they have established their undying passion,more sincerity follows and you seen none of the mischievous chemistry that he shared with Ayesha Takia in Wanted. Instead, what we get are knitted eyebrows and a pained, intense look. It's only in the last chase that you get the heart melting Salman smile. It's fortunate that it is in the end, because then thats what you take back with you and all is forgiven.

Verdict? Salman should play Salman,whether as a cop, a ruffian or doomed lover. Thats what the public wants and that's what they should get.I would not say its a bad film but it's not a great one either. Be Human Sallu, Be Yourself and we will love you forever.

Over the last 3 years, I have seen every Salman film without any logic or thought, and enjoyed atleast Dabangg & Ready, this time, he wanted me to think & I wasnt ready to.

A RAW Agent who goes on a few missions, falls in love, elopes. Thats the story in short.
Only 2 hours 10 min long, the film covers some stunning locales, especially Cuba.

The romantic tracks is a bit too slow & one expected the film to be more crisp.
The action is the highlight of the film & a farcry from his over-the-top madness.

The weakness of this film is the songs which really fall flat.
Salman roars yet again & shines in the fight sequences. Kat looks superb & does a decent job.

Director Kabir Khan gets stuck between a massy entertainer & a classy thinking encounter. Not always a good idea.

All in all, It takes me some time to accept Salman doing something not completely mindless & I dont know if thats what Id prefer him doing. One time watch only. view less

Having appeared in absurdist action-comedies that relied solely on his self-created eccentricity which contagiously sought refuge in the collective consciousness of the nation, Ek Tha Tiger comes as a refreshing breather with the unfathomable Khan safely under the competent lens of director Kabir Khan.

The resultant work may not reflect profound thoughtfulness but is nonetheless a product that distinctively stands apart due to its inventive, fairly original action that blends harmlessly with a neat dose of situational Salman-isque humor. But writing off Ek Tha Tiger as a mere Salman Khan-vehicle is reducing a genuinely well-carved script to the neighboring rubbles of Bodyguard and Ready - both outstandingly ridiculous instances of Indian cinema at its nastiest.

For Tiger is not only conscious in playing to the gallery, but is well aware to not be a victim of an elaborate exercise in purposelessness. When RAW agent Tiger, excessively devoted to his government job that has strong patriotic connotations, leaps over buildings and knuckles down the opposition with visible effort, theres a sense of involvement because he represents the country's force, and not a rented help out to protect a millionaire's daughter.

So is Ek Tha Tiger a gleaming product in a relative sense? Does the feature stand apart just because of the undeniably evident mediocrity of Salman Khans previous titles?

Yes and no. Yes, because Tiger's dangerous liaison with his Pakistani counterpart requires the backing of melodramatic songs and contrived walks in parks that compel you to stare at stars and feel forcefully sympathetic. And No - because the writer's invest time in giving a definite personality to their titular character. In Tiger, we don't see a man without motivations on a killing spree because it makes for high octane set pieces; we see in him an individual who takes his profession like any other, complaining about job hazards while gulping down beer, coming home to cook a famed dal, and restlessly opening the door to the milkman at dawn. These heartfelt scenes contrast very well with his practice as an official assassin and award the actioner with a satisfying humane touch.

There are instances where the film hints on identity crisis and loss of individuality routinely faced by agents forced to live double lives but the director chooses not to dwell on the theme for too long. Fair enough as long as the thought is drawn out. Bourne identity isnt the role model here. Tiger's alienation with women is quite relatable as it justifies his initial awkwardness, because he never got the chance to be with anyone. The actor is remarkably subtle as the driving force; both in his rendition of lines and emoting expressions.

While Katrina Kaif is an explosion. The once real-life pair keeps their chemistry consciously understated; the lines remaining conversational and substantially free from melodrama. In fact, Katrina's Zoya is an impassionate agent as long as is sustainable. The film delightfully steers away from being a cruel reinforcement of sexism as Kat is allotted her share of efficient action and is portrayed as a woman who can defend herself as well as assist her man.

Tiger isn't her hero. He is a mere companion and she is as capable as him. So you see Kat leap from curvaceous heights and figure her way out, with or without his aid. Her performance is well calculated and she plays it with required delicacy. There is no verbalizing every coming trouble; as understanding is reached through low-key emotions. The gorgeous Katrina Kaif outshines the collective visual brilliance of Dublin, Istanbul and Havana.

However, the plot isnt entirely free of loopholes and at times provides nave solutions, but the message of pointless war isnt totally misguided.

Thus, Ek Tha Tiger sustains itself very well due to the consistently engaging action, which should be lauded for its originality and performances which aren't overdone. For a change, it seems Salman Khan ihas actually committed himself to the role coming across as an endearing guy predictably entangled between action and romance, but not without motivations. The film's stature is further elevated thanks to the utterly convincing performances by its supporting cast of Ranvir Shorey and Girish Karnad.

The climax is adrenaline-pumping, blockbuster stuff that redeems any gaping flaws that the curious scrutinizer might joyfully point at.

A cruising motorcycle catching up with a fleeting aircraft with two beautiful creatures on each end?

*Whistle-Whistle*

This Tiger roars. And his Kat Growls. And the box-office worships this holy duo.

Something there is with spy tales and Hindi cinema, they both never seem to gel Ek Tha Tiger is no different from the trend of hyped agents this year who fizzle out with a whimper.

Salman is a RAW agent jumping from one mission to another and globe trotting in the process. He falls for Katrina, an ISI agent, both decide to ditch their respective "farz" for their countries and live happily ever after. While the idea of the movie is pregnant with possibilities for some amazing action, drama and suspense even by bollywood standards, Ek The Tiger disappoints completely.

Problems with Ek Tha tiger begin in the very first half hour, when the film opens with a gripping action sequence and abruptly jumps to a comic love track before derailing back to a Bourne-ish plot line. One wouldn't have complained though if both had been executed well. Sadly, that is not the case.

For a spy flick, the film is too facile and Salman too casual. He goes around smashing buildings cars and a tram in dublin in broad day light with no country's administration bothering to find out what is happening. He is too exposed to be a credible spy. The love sequences are labored and forced falling flat on their faces. Even the famed Katrina-Salman chemistry fails to lighten up some very lazy writing.

There are some slick action sequences that impress, but are far and few between and visibly look doctored. The chases in picturesque Istanbul and Cuba are the best parts of an other wise dull enterprise. The film is too verbose and the dialogues too inane, providing for some unintended laughter.

Salman looks old, and has to act instead of ripping off his shirt and dancing to mad item numbers. He is placed in a very classy slick setting, without his usual slapstick over smartness for a clutch, and looks lost. Katrina on the other hand has a role that accomodates her lack of acting prowess and accent intelligently. The biggest let down though is the Director Kabir Khan who seems to be totally clueless about how to marry Salman's mass appeal with his intent of making a Bond like action film.

Sans songs that would get the audience hooting, dialogues that get cat calls and whistles, a shirtless Salman and a missing story line make Ek Tha tiger a dreadfully dull film. Despite being just about two hours odd in length, the film seemed to go on for eternity. Even die hard Salman fans would find this underwhelming.

Salman Khan films dont need to adhere to the highest quality of filmmaking and they would still make more money than every other film released in the same year. He is at his peak right now and everything he touches will be gold. The more you accustom yourself to this reality, the more objective you can be while judging a film like this. Oh yes, it also doesnt matter what you or I think. This film wasnt exactly made for people who write about movies and pride themselves in analyzing its cinematic credibility. It is for those who whistle and applaud while watching Salman on screen. I am not the biggest Salman fan but I thoroughly enjoyed Wanted (2009) and Dabangg (2010). Although, Bodyguard (2011) was a stinker of the highest order. (What made the most money? Bodyguard. Exactly.)

Ek Tha Tiger is about Tiger, a RAW agent who has to *observe* a scientist who might be handing out information to the ISI. Salman does play a character but he does so while playing Salman, which is great considering he plays only Salman most of the time. He befriends Zoya (Katrina), who *takes care* of the scientists house. There is love story sandwiched between two chase sequences. Then comes a predictable twist which further snowballs into a film that is a cross between Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Bonnie and Clyde (1967). It manages to do the inter-cultural bit well but not the lovers-on-the-lam bit. In essence, the romantic escapism doesnt take flight. (In the film, it does, literally.)

It is no secret that we undermine our countrys mainstream cinema. This also makes us underestimate it. Its fine to underestimate it because we dont get the best movies out of this particular strand of filmmaking. However, I still believe they are extremely enjoyable and capable of delivering an occasional great movie. Ek Tha Tiger could be that film but it isnt.

Kabir Khan and Aditya Chopra give the audience what they want. There is a customary slow motion introduction shot of the star (also known as *the entry*), action sequences, romantic interludes, good production values and a little bit of comedy. The two things it doesnt have are: a villain and good music. While compromising on these, the makers want to give the audience something more. Sadly, this attempt is successful only in parts.

Yes, there is an ideological villain and the characters are running away from the unfounded hate that has been cultivated over the years but it still needs a tight plot, especially when its a spy film. You definitely do not include a scene of a character eavesdropping his way to vital information. Its political revisionism isnt the most mature take on it but it isnt childish and ridiculous either. I championed New York (2009) as it had a similar not-so-mature political vantage point but juggled it well with an effective story about unrequited love. Ek Tha Tiger has everything going for it except we dont really care much for the love story. The post-interval portions has them on the run but a few scenes of them sharing a genuinely romantic moment wouldnt hurt.

Ek Tha Tiger manages to salvage itself from ruin but not every time will an actor lend his stardom to do so. It could have been more than what it is, if it didnt run away from good storytelling. Albeit, it is remarkable that a film like this has released on the most jingoistic day of the year. A day which has a habit of somehow including hatred for our neighboring country. Several films have tried to wave out a white flag for the benefit of the two countries. A better film could say the same thing more effectively but I can make do with this for now. It would be ideal if we got a great film disguised as a masala film. The masala film is hard to find here. But is there a great film in there? No. A good film? Yes. The only problem is the good film doesnt take over the masala film entirely. view less

This is the 4th consecutive EID release of Salman Khan. The era that marks not only his resurgence but also that stamps his authority over everything Bollywood. Does he get lucky again this year?

One of the biggest production houses of Bollywood, YRF, a director inclined towards making realistic cinema, mixed in masala (Kabul Express, New York) added with 2 of the best looking and in-demand stars is a very attractive package.

The film starts with a voiceover from the promos (Ranveer Shorey) giving an insight of ISI & RAW, the covert intelligence agencies of the 2 countries celebrating their independence days back to back.

Avinash Singh Rathore a.k.a. Tiger (Salman Khan) is one of the best agents who never leaves his mission incomplete. Post completion of his mission in Iraq to catch a rogue agent, he is assigned to a sensitive case relating to Indias nuclear technology being stolen by ISI agents via the scientist who developed them, Dr. Kidwai (Roshan Seth). There Tiger a.k.a. Manish meets the part time housekeeper Zoya (Katrina Kaif) who helps him befriend the doctor for his research. To say anything more would be a give away of the plot.

Dialogues co-written by Neelesh Misra are funny in places and outrightly silly at the same time to tum ek agent ho. Choreography by Vaibhavi Merchant and Ahmed Khan is purely okay. It is more of Sallu doing his Sallugiri in terms of dance which will appeal to the viewers.

Sound by Debashish Misra and Dwarak Warrior is top rate. Action Consultant Conrad E. Palmisano along with action director Markos Rounthwaite do try and match upto international standards but at the same time do highlight the glitches of working with good looking Indian stars. Quite a few action shots cover the back portions of the stars, since they were obviously body doubles, but such things should have been covered properly. Likewise no one expects Salman to jump across the huts of Iraq and Turkey, and hence the CGI work by Tata Elxsi is very very commendable. They manage to put Salmans face almost perfectly on all the action pieces, be it the Iraq market fight, Dublin bus ride or the Cuba chase.

The killer in this whole film is the screenplay by Kabir Khan and the editing by Rameshwar S. Bhagat. The film is too long in the first half, leaving the viewer tired. Just because of the first halfs sluggishness, one spends the interval thinking about how are they going to sit through in the second half. But better sense does prevail and the second half is far better than the first half, so when you leave the theatre, you wont be disappointed. The cinematography by Aseem Mishra is brilliant, first class, top notch. Hats off to him.


Ranveer Shorey as Gopi, Tigers RAW buddy, is excellent. You sort of yearn for him to be more on screen since, he is the only one at times moving the story forward.

Girish Karnad as Shenoy, the RAW chief is again a treat to watch. But the script doesnt allow much of him to be seen on screen rather than fret and threaten his sub-ordinates. Since Tiger was so crucial to RAW, the writers could have easily fit Shenoy into his hunt for Tiger, which could have presented some interesting chase / dialogues / interactions between mentor and protg. But that opportunity is lost yet again. Roshan Seth is comical in his cameo.

Katrina Kaif as Zoya, the Indian origin Britisher looks divine. Every shot of hers is picture perfect. Be it in the casual Dublin leotards, the traditional Pakistani suits or the short dresses. She also gives a good performance, her comic timing being her forte and one of the saving graces of the first half. She has the maximum screen time post Salman and does not bore you, but yes her characterisation is very weak. It is as if the makers only focused on her make up and outfits and dialogues for the first half!

Bringing us to the star of the day, the reason why EID has gained so much momentum in the last 4 years (2009- Wanted, 2010 Dabangg, 2011 Bodyguard and now ETT), Salman Khan. It seems in his current phase there is nothing the man can do wrong. He lives upto the star persona every bit. He has become the Amitabh Bachchan and Rajnikant of the current Bollywood times. From the opening shot amongst falling ash, to the Banjaara dance or the United Nations meet, he looks like a million bucks and that is still an understatement. In an action film, there is hardly scope for acting, and in a current Salman film, even lesser. But who cares. We go to see the film to see what next is Salman going to do and we expect him to be larger than life. The viewers do not want Salman to do a Dhobi Ghat or a My Name is Khan. The viewers want him to throw caution to the winds, save the heroine in distress, teach the choreographers a new step in each film and beat the baddies to pulp... in style. And he does not disappoint, yet again.

A globe-trotting spy, pulling some gravity-defying stunts, and being archetypal himself - massive virility, with heart. That's the right combination for a crackerjack commercial potboiler. And if Salman Khan is at the helm of affairs, it raises ones expectations sky high. But anyone, even a kid, who knows even the most inferior works in the spy-thriller genre, will realize that Ek Tha Tiger is a scar on the face of that genre.

The grand Independence Day/Eid attraction from Yashraj Films banner is a shard in the guise of an espionage film. The film neither got fodder for cranial nerves nor the much needed twists-and-turns element to qualify as a spy-thriller. Salman Khan as a RAW officer could not justify the two extremes of such a role - A hero with a moral edge or a ruthless spy. He's just a mawkish, inane Intelligence officer who believes romance is a panacea that can cure even the worst of all problems and restore world peace. Director Kabir Khan has transformed the most laudable spy-film genre into a mere collage of action sequences.

Three people should be (dis) credited for making such a film. What was born as a story based on secret investigation in Aditya Chopra's mind was given the shape of a screenplay by Neelesh Mishra and Kabir Khan. The writing falters in every scene and is the film's biggest undoing, without leaving a trace of reality. Some unrealistic situations are conveniently thrown in to push the story and to make ground for some inevitable action sequences. The flaws in the script are easily fathomable. The film starts with a high-octane fight and chase sequence in northern Iraq and switches locations frequently and becomes a mundane journey of people caught in anticipated situations, out of which they escape in the most anticipated way.

Though the action sequences in Ek Tha Tiger are slick, they fall flat with the repeated use of Bollywood's stereotypic tool - slow motion frame. Aseem Mishra's cinematography, in terms of scale and depth, has some moments of glory. But in visualization it falls prey to banality and misinterpretations. Every international location is bound to have a postcardish introduction: Havana - An azure blue sky with a smoky tinge; Istanbul - Bazars and mosques; Dublin - Bagpipes and Scottish costumes. Technically, Ek Tha Tiger looks damn expensive for visuals and locations, but there is no intrigue or novelty. As ardent fans of Hindi cinema we watched such artificial colors, cuts and frames many a time. If the cinematography department have had expanded its horizon the movie would have been a seminal work in film-making in the respective genre.

In the first half, Salman Khan looks cool-as-a-cucumber and has some endearing moments that tickle the funny bone. This is an improvement over the brawny persona he portrayed in his previous films in recent past. But as the movie reaches the end, the primitive Khan emerges out and his new avatar quickly fades out. Katrina Kaif gets a role that's almost equal in length to that of her co-star, but she could not pull it off with poise giving her a dumb-wittish shade. In spite of the superficial mystery in her character, she does not surpass the Barbie doll image she's patented all through her films. The supporting cast does not need any mention for their sheer redundancy. Ranvir Shourey's character only exalts Sallu bhai's heroism and does nothing else. A great actor such as Girish Karnad is wasted for craving daal fry and telling Salman - “Apni dil ki nahi dimaag ki suno.”

Bottom-line: Ek Tha Tiger is one of the screenwriting nightmares of Bollywood. If there's an Indian version of Razzies, the film will be unanimously awarded the “Worst Screenplay of the year.” What starts as an adrenaline rushing entertainer transforms into a saga of dull romance. The action sequences in Ek Tha Tiger may rake in the moolah and also give some whistles for their deft execution, but that's not enough to stop it from being a damp squib. Adding insult to injury amidst all the mismatched set pieces is the message of Indo-Pak peace.
