Verdict - A wannabe " Satya" and falls short miserably, but you can see it to encourage Harman Baweja in his new role, otherwise avoid it
Some scripts give a good feeling and promise a financial viability but with a rider that talented people should convert it for the screen. Sadly this does not happen often. It certainly did not happen in this film. Having not so established actors and newcomers is no crime but they really need to give their best to make the film acceptable to the audiences.
This film becomes difficult to sit through after 40 minutes or so due to the painfully slow muddled up narrative inspite of the reasonably well sketched characters of gangsters against the background of the city's underbelly.
So we have a timid schoolboy who keeps getting slapped by his schoolmate and a neglecting father who asks him to offer the other cheek ,Gandhi style. On a rebound, our school kid then then seeks the help of local goon Tony who teaches him violence and welcomes him to his dark world of crime. Later when the boy is asked by his father to either change his ways or change his father ,our little Vicky then chooses Tony and becomes his assistant Vicky Kartoos( Which means Vickey the bullet for the uninitiated). The rest of the film traces his rise and fall in the crime syndicate, with some romantic escapades in between.
The director appears highly inspired by other movies like Satya but fails to rise to the levels required though the effort is showing. At some points the characters talk too much and the film meanders off aimlessly. He is no doubt helped by twisted though stylised characters and some excellent photography but falls short of engaging audience interest. Surely a case of more style and less substance. A faster pace and a straight narrative was required for better effect.
Acting wise Harman Baweja definitely impresses, and he deserves better roles to come up. All other supporting actors have done well with Anand Tiwari, and Prashant Narayan particularly good. Sunny Deol in a cameo just about makes it as the subdued Haryanavi.
The music does not help the movie in any big way and even the item number at the end does not impress, The film is photographed well.
