One of the best war films of recent times shot on a wide canvas. Set in 1940 it is about the evacuation of allied force soldiers who were pushed to the town Dunkirk with the wide expanse of sea in front.
The beginning of the film tells us that " The enemy has driven the British and the French armies to the sea. Trapped at Dunkirk they await their fate, hoping for deliverance, for a miracle ". The soldiers were indeed sitting ducks totally exposed to aerial attacks.
The film shows how a huge rescue effort was launched using all possible methods to pull the soldiers out of the predicament. Director Christopher Nolan has done a marvellous job in bringing to life the evacuation with the agony, pain, and anguish of the soldiers. The dialogue is minimal and the expressions tell all in this starkly realistic essay of human behaviour under adverse conditions.
The soundtrack is full of whirring engines of sea vessels and aeroplanes in addition to torpedoes exploding the ships. Noisy but Nolan balances this with the right amount of human emotions. The cinematography is superb capturing the sandy beaches and the choppy seas both with equally realistic results. Almost all emergencies possible in this scenario both in air and on sea have been shown. Aeroplanes attacking the totally helpless soldiers with guns and bombs has been shown effectively. The sinking ship with soldiers in some ways looked like a military version of Titanic.
After the rescue is complete with many dead a soldier reads the day's newspaper giving Winston Churchill's speech.
" We shall fight on the beeches
We shall fight on the landing grounds
We shall fight in the fields
We shall fight in the streets
We shall fight in the hills
    We shall never surrender "
