Verdict - A family view.
The admissions to the nursery classes in Delhi( the locale of the film under review ) begin from January every year.It takes around three months to complete the process. All kind of notifications/circulars/clarifications/ objections/court rulings keep parents guessing throughout. Each parent desires that their five-plus off springs get admission in a school of their choice.Success at the entry stage relieves them from stress till the children turn seventeen.Do all succeed?
It all depends on their perceptions and the mind set.Other things being equal, majority of parents want quality English medium education in a public school. The rat race boils to a surplus demand.Simple commonsense tells us that each seat has a price tag running into lacks, all kind of malpractices are resorted and recommendatory letters are put out.
Herein also the situation is similar.Raj Batra( Irrfan Khan) and Meeta( Saba Qamar),wealthy but Hindi medium wallah parents, fail to get their daughter Pia ( Dishita Sehgal) admitted to an English medium school from the front door. They approach. the back channel route. They procure a fake EWS certificate.25% seats are reserved under the RTE Act for children belonging to this category.
They succeed. All goes well until complaints are filed to detect the ' fake admissions'.The couple have no choice except to fake themselves as ' poor'.They start living in a low lying locality. What happens next? Go view for yourself.
Where the film succeed? The story is contemporary. The spoken word is believable. The performances uniformly are tops. The Irrfan-Saba Jodi ,Deepak Dobriyal( the Shuddh Gareeb),Tillitama Shome( a career counsellar) and Amrita Singh( the school principal)-all shine and play their characters to the T.Saba Qamar gas a pleasu d screen presence in her debut. The wit,the humour, the excitement and the drama is well built.
My scene stealers#The interactions between the parents and the career counsellar. The window popping enquiry for registering oneself under the EWS category. The scenes in the low lying locale. The bondings between the real and fake poors. The Sahib sweeping the floor in the presence of the poor and the maid. The climax scene.
The negatives? The child remains docile and unmoved even when the parents live as 'fake poors'. The music leaves much to be desired.
All in all,Hindi Medium is a must watch for teachers, parents and the family crowd. An enjoyable affair.
