Lovers of musical romances and jazz music will love this film. Whatever genre is your favourite, you are likely to love the old world charm of this dance and music oriented entertainer embellished with exotic cinematography. One remembers the movie " Sound of music" which was a huge favourite too.The first song dance amidst the cars parked on the motorway sets the mood for this musical and a number of such scenes follow. Another extremely well done song dance is the one at night on the road as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone look for their parked cars. The backdrop is show business with Ryan as a struggling jazz musician( pianist) and Emma Stone who wants to become an actress. Both are dreamers with hope and go through their frustrations and rejections bravely. They meet and start falling in love slowly but surely while they discuss their dreams and ambitions. The high class production values of the film make it eminently watchable. For those technically inclined there are some beautiful long duration tracking shots with night effect and the soft focus camera work is pure magic with some superb frames. The movie advocates jazz music and there is plenty of it in the film.
Excellent is the word for the direction by Damien Chazelle, acting of Ryan Gosling / Emma Stone, music ( piano never sounded better), cinematography ( highly fluid), costume design, and sound recording This is a winner all the way and should pick up the major Oscar awards next month.
