A basic rule of geometry that we learnt in school is that parallel lines never intersect. The director of this movie has taken this rule very seriously and made a film with four unrelated stories, which crash into each other in the end when he realizes that this is a movie and not a geometry tutorial.

There is really no point getting into the story of something so pointless. Especially when they have nothing in common. I dont know why people like Kay Kay and Ranvir Shorey agreed to do this movie at all. Maybe the narration was impressive. Their stories interest you to begin with till you realize that its all pointless. The only part which evokes a few laughs is Ranvirs mad OTT Bong friend. But he is not worth a trip to the theatre

And it wasnt because I was moved beyond tears seeing the screwed up lives of the characters on screen. It was because that was the only escape I could come up with to not endure this film any longer. With a stellar star cast like Ranvir Shorey, Kay Kay Menon, Asrani, Jackie Shroff and Manu Rishi (ok maybe not star cast), Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi is a case of a terrible idea gone worse.

To explain the story of this film would be like trying to solve an advanced mathematics conundrum while being on some serious dope; there are so many twists and so many stories that the film just ends up looking like a convoluted mess that maybe even the writer of the film Rakesh Mehta couldnt fathom. And because he was so high on drugs (there is a heavy usage of them in the film) that he probably thought that it was just too clever. I think not. The writer of the film is incidentally the director as well. And he lets us know this via a credit roll that starts at the beginning of the film and ends somewhere near the end of Act 1, by which point I was beyond caring. The scenes are shot like a bad eighties film or a really pathetic TV serial. They begin and end on their own accord and you never really fully invest in either the story or the characters. The editing is choppy but then again I wouldnt blame the editor. He clearly had very little to work with.

The actors some what try and lift the film but it is a doomed effort. When you know that Jackie Shroff is playing dad to Kay Kay Menon, there is very little you can do with your acting to salvage the situation. The entire cast should be held accountable as they are accomplices in this crime on the poor unsuspecting audience. However Manu Rishi as the Haryanvi cop stuck in the Marathi politics of Bombay Police shines in some scenes and I have a hunch that he wrote his own dialogues because they were so not like anything else in the film and he is known to be a great dialogue writer.

The film is an utter waste of time and money and perhaps can be used more as a torture tool on terrorists than for any other sort of entertainment. I am going with 0.5 stars and that too for Manu Rishis unsuccessful attempt to make the film bearable. Skip it even if a gun is held to your head. You would prefer the bullet.
