I must admit that when the promos of Maximum hit the TV screens, I was reasonably excited. A cop film by Kabeer Kaushik, who had previously directed the beautifully crafted Sehar, another cop film. If there is one thing in Bollywood that can be counted on, it is the lack of consistency. So two films on similar subjects, made by the same man; the results - totally different. Maximum lets you down royally.

The script had nothing new to offer except for a curious mix of grey characters and a bad cop vs. bad ass cop scenario. But as it progresses, the film meanders in unchartered territories, much like the cops in the film. But instead of extras being shot on screen, you want to shoot yourself in the audience.

Performance wise, this is a showcase film for Sonu Sood. He displays grit and veracity. But a poor screenplay and some really lame dialogues makes him look ridiculous. One particular scene that comes to mind is when his senior advises him to hit the bottle more than hit the criminals. Naseeruddin Shah as the antagonist to Sood's character looks disinterested in the proceedings and is a pale shadow of his plucky character from A Wednesday. Neha Dhupia goes de-glam and that's just about her only contribution. Vinay Pathak and the rest fit their bills but the overall structure is so screwed that they end up annoying most of the times.

Kabeer Kaushik has managed to dash all hopes that his previous films or any previous cop films have given to the lovers of this kind of cinema. My advice would be to stay in and order Ab Tak Chhappan on DVD. Its still a paisa vaisool.
