The story of Onamalu is priceless like the fragrant breezes of nostalgia . At times you laughat times you cry and at times you just wish you can walk the familiar paths all over again and feel the songs of innocence under your skin.
Narayana Maastaru is a teacher who lives in a village where every man , beast and bird are assigned specific roles . The beasts know they have fields to plough and the birds know they have to announce the arrival of spring and dawn the fileds know they have mouths to feed and the wells know they have thirsts to quench . It is the village where lads dive gaily into flowing rivers and the students take great pride in reciting the pledge under the humble skies of the village school. Here Ramazan and Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated with great fervor and with equal pride.
But the story does not end here. Narayana Maastaru who stays with his sons family in US and who feels claustrophobic in the neon lit ambience out there craves for his village which he had left long time back after his wifes death. On coming back he expects to find the village exactly as he had left. But things have changed. Schools are no longer about teaching . They are about A/C classrooms techno aids and big heavy school bags . Quenching thirst is no longer about taking a sip from the rivers and wells. Its about drinking from branded mineral water bottles .Cows are no longer worshipped and fed with ones own hands but bundled off to various slaughter houses Aged parents are considered to be a burden and packed off to old age homes
He meets some of his older popular students. While they are glad to have him back like him some of them are not happy with the degradation of values and in an odd way Narayanu Maastaru feels responsible.
The handling of the theme is deft and compassionate. The past is not glorified and the present is not insulted . Narayana Mastaru exhorts the younger generation to rise and grab the skies but at the same time he tells them to be firmly rooted to their soils and to their origins .
It is a beautiful coming of age movie and we have some stellar performances by Rajendra Prasad and Kalyani . The screenplay and cinematography are flawless and we have some really beautiful lyrics by Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry .
I would rate this movie 4.5 and my favorite scene when Kalyani in a fit of anger serves Geffe and Gipma to Rajendra Prasad .
So what are you waiting for ?Go and feel the village fields under your feet this weekend and feel good that you have shed that random tear which you thought you were not capable of .
