Totally a woman centric story of a naive, vulnerable behenji type middle class Delhi girl who is dumped by her abroad returned fiance on her wedding day. Instead of brooding over the debacle, the girl Rani gets over it fast and decides to go for her honeymoon alone to Paris and Amsterdam as planned. The movie shows her experiences in these cities and how she returns a liberated and stronger woman who knows her rights.
Just the kind of plot to thrill the many girls/women out there since it speaks for woman empowerment. The movie scores excellent in almost all departments starting from script ,direction, acting, music to the technical aspects.
The director Vikas Bahl has done a commendable job in documenting the travel, travail and trauma of Rani as she interacts with various non Indian characters each of whom is different from her. Her tattoo covered hep room mate in Paris ( Lisa Haydon), her group of three male room mates in Amsterdam ( Japanese, Russian, French ), her Italian restaurant boss, the stripper in the red light area who sends money back home, are some of the people Rani meets during her sojourn . She develops a special bond with each of these characters and each time comes out more confident and stronger. The director is sometimes guilty of showing her as super naive like when she is in the sex toy shop or when she chooses to walk in a deserted alley at night.
All in all,an engaging collection of scenes of all types which entertain and touch you at times. The message is that understanding and love have no barriers of language or nationality. The scenes show that everyone loves tasty food, everyone is scared of lizards, and all are equally effected by death of near one. The bigger message is of course that the fair sex is strong enough to live her own life in the way she wants.
This film is an out and out achievement of Kangana Ranaut whose acting is superlative, with her sweet simplicity, vulnerability and naive nature reaching out to all. She has interpreted the shades and nuances of the character superbly. Truly an award winning performance. In supporting roles Lisa Haydon, and Rajkumar Rao have done well.
A striking feature of the film is the almost continuous music track which adds to the value of the scenes. All technical aspects are first class.
