Walking into a hall full of kids in pin drop silence is not an everyday sight. For me it's already a positive statement for the movie. 5 minutes into the movie i was hooked on like a trout to the fishing line and the is not something that happens very often.
John Carter is a movie based on the 1917 science fantasy novel, A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It tells the story of Carter, a confederate of the American Civil War, who is transported to mars, or as the locals call it, Barsoom. The difference in the physical parameters of the planets results in Carter acquiring super human abilities that make him an asset to the four armed, green inhabitants, the Tharks. One thing leads to another and he finds himself in the middle of another war and in love with the warrior princess of Helium.
Admittedly, the plot is a little thick but it's not something that a person with a decent IQ can not figure out soon enough. The locals are all fighting for water and the villains supreme, The Holy Therns, are acting like gods and enjoying the show. what's so difficult to figure out. The problem, i suppose is that the stark and masaala free script cannot appeal much to the Indian Audience.
This movie is one that requires a cup of imagination that is not already full; and it is certainly not for the everyday romance lover. You should only go for this movie if you are a true sci-fi lover.
Every action had a reason and purpose behind it. Why Carter was doing what he was, why were the tribes fighting, what was the purpose of the Therns the connections were well established. For me the movie was like a perfectly baked cookie, with all the ingredients in perfect proportion. A big dollop of sci-fi, a Packet of imagination, a tablespoon of romance and a spas of conspiracy Voila..!! We have John Carter!
