Fatso is a light hearted movie on love friendship and living as someone else.
Purab Kohli & Gul Panags characters are madly in love and engaged to get married when Purab gets killed in a car accident. In a hilarious after life sequence he reaches a Sarkari post-death office. Here he realizes that he is dead instead of his friend who was actually meant to die. The Death dept officials agree that he can go back to being alive. The problem is that his body has already been cremated. The only option now for him is to go back into his friends body whose soul leaves that body and he inhabits it. He has now to win back his girlfriend who is being wooed by one of the guys in their gang. Problem is the body he has to now inhabit is of their fat unattractive buddy . Will he be able to do it? And how?
Interesting premise you would agree and everything fits in till he gets into that body and v=comes back. I would assume that now the body only remains Fatsos but the personality is totally Purabs. Though the movie continues to entertain in the second half when Purab enters Ranvirs body there are too many unexplained bits and too many interesting avenues left unexplored. There is so much content that can be juiced out of this situation but the movie does not take advantage of any of them. We dont really understand why Guls character falls for fat Ranvir finally. She tells him at one point that tum totally badal gaye ho but we dont see a drastic personality change at all. There is not enough to convince us that he has become more charming or changed enough for Gul to stop treating him indulgently as their fat buddy and start looking at him with new eyes.
All these not very well thought out threads left me with a sort of unsatisfied feeling after the starter (specially that Death Dept scene) had whetted my appetite. It is still a sweet, funny, film with good performances so you wont do badly watching it but but but..
