“Amit Sahni Ki List is nothing but a colossal bore-fest. Despite a few chuckles here and there, this film did not tick any boxes in our watch list. Even Vir Das' fans will be disappointed. ”

Try as I might, for Vir Das in any of his Conflicted Young Man incarnations can be quite likeable, it is very difficult to gush over Amit Sahni...yes it is lovely to have a female protagonist challenge the hair straightening iron –we have had Pooja Bhatt two decades ago, and Preeti Zinta in Dil Chahta Hai (good curls) and in Lakshya (not so good curls) but not much after that, and yes that dog was quite endearing and the pop culture references were spot on, but as the sum of all its parts, nyah!
So Vir Das jis ki zindagi kaafi set hai goes about a-wooing , his trusty list of ‘non-negotiables’ in hand. He has come up with The List after a very bad heart break, that he came up with the list when he was still wearing black Tshirts celebrating his fav rocker and that he has since then progressed to slick suits is a fact that avoids him, him who overthinks and plans EVERYHTHING! So the list (and his love for Sachin) persists. We thus meet a smorgasbord of South Mumbai’s female population, but no need to start hedging bets for he is going to reject all of them. Of course he is going to meet The One who will be a cliched opposite of all that he had in mind, of course the moment he Puts A Ring On It, he will meet The One who will tick all the boxes on said list. To Das’ Amit credit he is pretty up front about his confusion and does not go about sneaking behind anyone’s back. I wished he had. For the movie is such a simple Connect The Dots, it is as if the film makers, wait for it, had a list. Nutty girl who may remind audience of some 90s heroine for we couldnt spring for A List Star, check. Parents with their annoyances cranked up to 2014, check. Zany best friend, check. Mumbai: Glossy Version, check. Liberal dose of popular culture, techs—check. Stock “with it” touches, scene freeze, talking to the camera, animated thought bubbles—check.
A movie with a soul, a movie where it doesnt appear as Das, AND DAS IS IN EVERY (ALBEIT REALLY WELL STYLIZED) FRAME! is in one of his stand up shows , it is not. Probably it wasnt on the list.
