“With Bhandarkar not quite in his trademark element, Calendar Girls does little to charm the audience.”
Madhur Bhandarkar has given such amazing films in past like Chandani Bar, Page 3, Corporate, Fashion & Traffic Signal. A director with such a stunning filmography giving Calendar Girls is just sad. I feel sad for Madhur Bhandarkar.
Calendar Girls is a film revolving around 5 ambitious girls who think that somehow magically, their lives will change after they feature on some Calendar owned by business tycoon Rishabh Kukreja (Suhel Seth) & Timmy Sen (Ronit Roy). After their calendar shoot, their lives change magically. Their paths are different & their outcomes are also different. The 5 stories are not interconnected but they go parallel. One becomes a wife of a business tycoon, another girl becomes a reporter, another one goes on PR frenzy, one more calendar girl gets involved in match fixing scandal & the final one gets into escort business.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar has tried showing both sides of the coin through the film. It’s a good idea on paper because honestly, I haven’t seen anyone in our country talking about Calendar Girls like people in the film were doing. Out of 5 debutants, Kyra Dutt who plays the character of Sharon Pinto is the best. She has acted pretty well & she is far more convincing in her role than other girls. Ruhi Singh as Mayuri Chauhan also stands out & gives a little comic relief in the film. But other than that, Akansha Puri, Avani Modi & Satarupa Pyne are just wood-faced throughout the film.
The story is not convincing & surprisingly, the direction is not up to the mark. It just doesn’t feel like Madhur Bhandarkar’s film. Music is totally forgettable. Except Kyra Dutt & Ruhi Singh, nobody acts well. Every scene is caricature-ish. Dialogues are just too cliché & done to death. Calendar Girls may portray itself as a social-message film but seriously, just avoid it. Maybe he knew the film is bad, hence Madhur Bhandarkar himself appears in the film & lets his heroine praise his other past work. You wouldn't want to hang their Calendar in your house for sure.
