This is one movie which demonstrates that weak direction can tremendously reduce its impact on audiences. With seasoned actors like Shabana Azmi and Juhi Chawla available and with a reasonably current subject of school education , director Jayant Gilatar could have presented a strongly appealing film but the result is a damp squib. The basic plot relates to some issues like commercialization in the education sector and the reducing respect for the teacher. It also touches upon the subject of comparatively low salaries of school teachers. Pretty, mundane issues which needed a strong screenplay but unfortunately it is not so.
Shabana Azmi plays an ageing maths teacher while Juhi plays a young married bubbly chemistry teacher who loves to do mimicry of earlier film stars Rajesh Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha. Though principal Zarina Wahab is a decent lady she has a tyrant of a deputy in the shape of Divya Dutta who along with the trustee wants to modernise the school with younger smarter better dressed teachers. Instead of terminating few teachers, supervisor Divya begins to create situations like stopping perks, getting chairs for teachers removed from classrooms, misemploying teachers so that the teachers themselves resign in frustration. In addition she is Hitler of sorts with rude behaviour. On the basis of outdated teaching methods, she terminates Shabana who gets a heart attack and is hospitalised. It is left to Juhi to fight back with the help of a friendly TV journalist Richa Chadha. In a TV interview Juhi talks of the lack of respect to teachers and their low salaries. She also bemoans the reducing guru- Shishya relationship and asks people ( NASA engineers, chartered accountants, army officers etc) to get in touch with their teachers so that they get some happiness in their twilight years. The film actually ends on a KBC type contest conducted by Rishi Kapoor to bring out the superiority ot teachers.
The film is cliche ridden to a great extent. All these characters and situations do not create the impact required and the dialogue also does not help. Director Jayant Gilatar has an effective basic plot in his hands but fails to convert it into engaging fare. Shabana and Juhi do what they can and make an impression. Girish Karnad as the husband is adequate in a brief role and Divya Dutta as the domineering rude supervisor has been made too negative for comfort. Rishi Kapoor conducts a KBC quiz with customery style. Jackie Shroff and Zarina Wahab are wasted in brief roles.
