It is important that you don't miss the beginning of Daas Dev. It tells you the 3 things that have inspired Sudhir Mishra to make this movie. One is Sarat Chandra Chatterjee for the character of Dev Das and how love can build or break a man, Shakespeare for the way that the lust for power destroys every decent human instinct and his grandfather who was a Chief Minister who did not let his kids enjoy the trappings of power and threw them in to the rough and tumble of this world and made them into more grounded individuals. If not for his grandad he says he would have turned out like Daas Dev.

The movie takes these three strands of love, power and integrity and weaves a tight, intriguing story full of twists and turns. Dev loves Paro. She is the daughter of a man who served his politician father but who has now fallen out of favour with the politician's brother who took over the reins after his brother dies in a chopper crash. Dev is a wastrel, given to booze and drugs. He has no ambition but Paro prods him to return to his father's constituency and join his uncle in politics. Chandni is a kind of fixer who works with a power broker close to the politician. She is quite a mover and manages things behind the scenes that control people's lives. She also is in love with Dev.

The two odd hours are dense with events and back stories and lots of political machinations and manoeuvrings. You need to pay close attention to know what is going on. By the second half, things reach a fever pitch but by then you are completely sucked into the plot and clued in. The music is outstanding .

The movie works superbly thanks to the cast who all put in gritty performances. I thought Rahul Bhatt as Dev was marvellous. His belief in his dad, his love for Paro, his sincerity and desire to do the right thing and above all his confusion as he grapples with things really struck a chord in me. Richa Chadha as Paro is quite good too though Aditi Rao Hydari could have been a bit more powerful given that she is such a central figure. Saurabh Shukla and Deepraj Rana as the politicians are believable and Dalip Tahil as the power broker is smooth.

This is a tough movie to watch. It traces a man's journey from his descent into a dark hole to his clawing his way out of it several times only to fall back again. At the base of it, there is love which both nourishes him and destroys him in turn and the greed for power that can turn men into monsters. This twisted Dev Das is worth a watch.
