This is a small movie focussing on the inner life of a little girl caught in the emotional trauma of her parents marriage. She thinks her mother has gone away and has been replaced by an alien.
For an adult to get into the mind of a six year old and show us the story from her viewpoint is a tough job. As adults we have moved far away from the imaginative world of our childhood and I think first time director Sona Jain needs a pat on her back for doing a decent job of it. The fears stalking the child, her insecurities stemming from making conjectures on things seen and heard and her sadness and desperation to get her real mother back are well brought out.
The movie is in English and that affects the spontaneity of the acting a bit I think. The dialogues sound a bit stilted. The acting is competent for the most part. The young kid playing the brother is the most natural of the lot and the chemistry he shares with his kid sister is also well done.
I think the movie could have been more nuanced, more finely tuned so that we heard every soft note. The whole bit with the psychiatrist for instance could have been much better done. But I think its a job well done for a first time director.
Should you see this move? I think you can if only to see what new directors are doing with such unusual story lines which focus on big problems that crop up in our small lives. Its a short movie (1.5 hours) and it would be time well spent. It will make you reset the barometer on what you say and do in front of your kids.
