Akshay Kumar continues to belt out cinema which pulls at our hearts. The story of 1948 Olympic Gold is not known to many of us. In fact in the sense the director Reema Kagti deserves some compliment that she has told a story which remains gripping, thrilling and emotional in turns.
The movie is the story of how a Junior Manager dreams of India winning a Hockey gold in free India. His dream starts with a moment in 1936 Berlin and he has to wait 12 long years for his ambition to become a reality. This journey that Tapan undertakes to build a team and redeem his own self as well get a new found laurel for the nation is what Gold is all about. In a climax which has emotions which can bring lump in your throat the team and two generations including the once alcoholic Tapan get redemption.
The movie keeps building inch by inch moment by moment and by the time it reaches that gut wrenching plot point at interval where Tapan’s team suddenly gets eroded by a cruel twist of destiny the time that you realize that Kagti has you by your collar.
The movie has rich comedy which is also real , a wife taunting her husband that after eating so much fish you don’t have a sharp brain. A taunt that comes to his rescue in an epic moment. Am not giving any further hints that would be a spoiler.
Gold also is noticeable for some very very well developed characters. In particular the two center forwards who come from different backgrounds like Himmat Singh and RPS aka Raghubir Pratap Singh. The movie has brief but very balanced role for Mouni Roy too and she does a very confident good job of it. The other characters though making brief appearances make impact like Mr.Wadia and the slimy team manager Mehta.
A special word for Akshay Kumar who has shared a lot of camera limelight with actors in this movie and very bravely he has take a non-glamourised avtar in this movie. Half the time the camera focuses on his face which shows a literally scarred and wrinkled alcoholic who is not exactly in great shape.
Gold is a solid watch if you love stories that are told with depth and sincerity. Gold is worth your ticket money for sure.
My rating a solid four stars.
