London seems to be a favourite location to present stories in the recent times. The movie under review also falls into this category.
GIL is basically a crass comedy layered with an emotional touch in the climax.
What's the plot? Two elderly couple( Paresh Rawal as Chachaji and Tanwi Azmi as Guddi aka ?) have disembarked at the Heathrow Airport. They have an ' hidden agenda' to visit London. They con two youngsters ( Kartik Aaryan as Aryan and Kriti Kharbanda as Anaya) to believe that they are some ' distant relatives' of the boy from Punjab. They start living with the younger ' live in relationship 'jodi .This Jodi has it's own problems to sort out.The reluctant relationship gathers momentum .Elderly care and advice begets good faith. The Jodi gets married. It's here that the relationship turns sour. The younger couple gets rid of the elderly couple.Do they succeed? What was the purpose of the visit? Go see for your self.
Where does the movie score high? It's message is- one should take differentiations in religion, colour and race as given and try to do the best to pull along rather than indulge in finger pointing and scoring brownie points as politicians do.Stay where you may but be rooted to your soil and culture.Performances by all are above average, though Paresh Rawal over acts at times .
Pitfalls? Several.Crassness could have been avoided.Stereotyping imagery of nationals of a neighbouring country was undesirable.Sequences of 'flart jokes' ,put offs the viewers.( In Piku it was the constipation problem of Big B,here it's the flart problem of Paresh). The music angle is a let down.No single number is hummable.
All in all GIL is enjoyable despite the negatives pointed above.
