“The film kicks off well and easily manages to entertain the audiences till the interval. The second half is predictable but Parineeti Chopra and her mind-boggling performance save the film. A decent watch!”

Ishaqzaade is not a typical Yash Chopra bubble gum romance. It has no chiffon clad women, or cutesy pie college scenes in some foreign university. Set in the hinterland of UP in Almor, it is the love story between a firebrand girl and a crazy boy. She is the daughter of the local Muslim MLA Qureshi and he is the nephew of his arch -rival Chauhan. After trading a couple of insults, slaps and gunshots, the two crazy trigger- happy youngsters fall in love.

All this till the interval keeps you riveted. The screenplay and dialogues are great, the romance very intense and consuming. Post a twist in the tale at the interval, the movie changes track a bit and from just the romance and political rivalry, it also acquires more Hindu Muslim overtones. It all ends naturally very intensely.

Parineeti Chopra lives up to the promise she displayed in Ladies v/s Ricky Behl. Her character is the opposite of the ditzy rich girl she played in that movie. Her intelligent face, flashing eyes and impeccable dialogue delivery make her a dream to watch. Her Zoya is feisty and tough, sweet but not vulnerable so that when she does break down you reach out to her. She can put any of our current saccharine heroines to shade though she may not flaunt a size zero body like theirs. Arjun Khanna also makes an impressive debut. He conveys the wildness of his character Parma effectively. He is not much to look at but then maybe thats a function of his character here. But for a first movie he gets full marks. Gauhar Khan puts in a good act as Chand bibi the nautch girl who loves him. She also looks a million bucks in the item songs.

Amit Trivedi does a great job of the music. No namby pamby sweet tunes would have done justice to this love story. It needed the heavy rock beat he has infused in it.

The movie sags a slight bit in the second half but not so much that you lose interest. Also, I think the moral message at the end could have been avoided.

Ishaqzaade is a love story that is reminiscent of a grand romance like Ek duje ke liye. It has the kind of passion and energy that leaves you feeling a bit weak in the knees. And I think we all need that sort of romantic feeling once in a while to remind us what life is actually all about.
