At the end of the film an Inspector says Achca, toh yeh Love Story hai? Exactly my emotion.

Lafangey Parindey is the love story of Nandu & Pinky and a secret which binds them together. But it is actually three stories into one. Aditya Chopra seems to be fascinated by dance competitions. Whether it is Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Aaja Nachle or Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. And now with this film he adds Indias Got Talent to the list.

I also wonder what it was about the script that interested Pradeep Sarkar. Because at best the script tries very hard to do justice to the world it has set the story in but doesnt bring out the vibe, the buzz, the dirt and grime of the Wadis of Mumbai. The world of Parineeta was a world which Sarkar knew but I doubt if he has ever stepped into this world of Wadis. Nothing wrong in that coz even Danny Boyle made Slumdog without knowing or living in the world he created. As far as direction is concerned this is better than Laaga Chunari Mein Daag but nowhere close to Parineeta. What could have been a 90 min film is stretched to 100 mins. The screenplay works on three levels - a love story, an investigation and a talent hunt all trying to connect that one incident which sets the story in motion. In the end you are confused as to what story does the film want to tell you? Aditya Chopra should seriously get rid of his obsession of bringing television into cinema. Even the underground boxing gets so repetitive after a point that every time a boxing match comes you can predict the scene, shot by shot.

The film is badly written and it shows. Casting the two leads was this films biggest blunder. Neil Nitin Mukesh tries his best to fit into the role which was clearly not meant for him but this is his best effort yet. Deepika also tries really hard to bring some believability in her character but somehow she never appears convincing as a girl born and bought up in the wadi. Given the scope of the script this is her best performance since Om Shanti Om. What works for the film are the friends who surround the two lead. They are the only real part of the film. At times I really wanted to know about their lives more than the two leads. Each and every one of them is the soul of the film. This really seems to be the year of supporting actors.

Final Few Words: Go watch if you are fan of either Neil or Deepika otherwise wait for the DVD.
