Lakshmi is a story of hope, courage and victory!

“Lakshmi is a hard-hitting film on a disturbing issue. Although the storytelling is typical, it’s worth watching for the performances.”

I have always enjoyed Nagesh Kuknoor's work, atleast most of it. When I saw the promos of Laxmi, I surely felt like watching it & hoped it would spring something other than a preachy film on prostitution. What I ended up watching was a heavy, disturbing journey that somewhat left me more exhausted than inspired.

A story we have seen many times before, a child is put through the ugly world of prostitution & made to sleep with scores of men, sometimes even when she is in pain & unwell. Graphic images of her life makeup for a chunk of this trip that takes you through the first conviction of child prostituion in Andhra Pradesh.

At about 2 hours, the film isnt very long but the images & the content makes it much more difficult to sit through. Visually, a lot of explicit content is thrown at you so this ones surely not for the squeamish.

But what really anchors this film is its performances. From Nagesh K himself to Shefali Shah as the madame to slimy Satish Kaushik & the best of them all, newcomer Monali Thakur, who shines through he innocent eyes & makes you really feel for her.

Director Nagesh K has delivered far superior films but this one is still better than some of his turkeys.

All in all, Laxmi is the sad truth of the world we live in. Would have been a great eye-opener if we hadn't seen this through umpteen films earlier. Nonethless, watch it for the actors if you must.
