LPNY is the story about Lalitha, a middle class south Indian girl from Chembur who is on her way to New York to study politics with full scholarship, and Nikhil, a Punjabi, rich kid from Bandra who is going to study Film Making in London on 100% dads money. And the reason why I thank New York out of all the three cities in this tri-city marathon is because thats where the film ends. London Paris New York is one of those films that capture a particular mood (in this case of the internationally acclaimed Before Sunrise) and turn it on its head and toss it around so much that before you know it, there is nothing beautiful left from the original idea and all there is its garish cheesy Bollywood version.
The film is about Nikhil and Lalitha who meet on a stop over in London and before the day ends, Nikhil who is this suave flirt ends up falling for the (pseudo) feminist Lalitha. The rest of the film is about Nikhil chasing Lalithas egoistical (albeit cute) fanny across continents in a bid to make her fall in love with him. She on the other hand eludes and breaks his heart every time. But as true love is, she ends up falling for him on the day of her wedding. Touche.
The screenplay is absurd and most of the dialogues so retarded that you laugh at the idiocy of them. Barring a couple of scenes, there is nothing that holds your attention or even makes you smile. Lalithas character is almost schizophrenic and not in a good way. You never understand her motives for behaving how she does. Nikhil (portrayed almost to perfection by Ali Zafar) has some good scenes but an overall lack of coherency in the narrative make them fade into oblivion and you remember nothing remarkable from the film.
Aditi Rao Hydari as a newcomer fails to make her mark simply because in spite of her doe eyes and pouty lips, she never makes Lalitha endearing to watch. Zafar shines and has shown remarkable improvement since Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.
Writer-director Anu Menon delivers a half baked film and even though shot beautifully, some poor editing and an overall lack of vision makes London Paris New York a tedious outing. The music of the film is hummable and sweet, which is why I m giving the film an extra half star. 2.5 stars for an average adventure.
