“Though its hero Varun Dhawan is commendable, Main Tera Hero gets zero points for its story. A time pass comedy for die hard David Dhawan fans.”

Main Tera Hero begins with a lame joke involving Salman's dialogue about ehsaan (favour) and Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. David Dhawan loves slapstick humor, which doesn't involve wit or intelligence. I don't have a difficult time with such films. I find them perfectly watchable and enjoyable. The first half of Main Tera Hero is watchable but the second half becomes inane and overstays its welcome. Mostly, because the plot of the film is an enormous failure. It's one of the worst stories a comedy could get. I wonder how the Telugu film Kandireega (of which this is remade) turned out to be a successful film.

Varun Dhawan, who I liked in his Student of the Year (2012) debut, wishes to gain stardom from his sophomore film. Either he wishes it or his father wishes it upon him, I do not know. He has an appealing screen presence and has what it takes to become a star. Sadly, this film does not make the desired use of his talent. He isn't bad at comedy; he just isn't there yet. You can see him trying; he manages to get a few laughs. The plot is to be blamed, yes, but he seems to be having a hard time pulling off the buffoonery. Sure, he's no Govinda. Nobody can be Govinda, except Govinda. Nobody can be Salman Khan either. While not a stalwart of comedy, Salman's nonchalance fits well with David Dhawan's comedic style. Ranbir Kapoor is what Dhawan seems to be aiming for. The kind we saw in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009). He succeeds but only to an extent.

Varun Dhawan shows his abs, dances with flair and punches the bad guys like a Hindi film hero should. It's another thing that it is hard to take him seriously when his name is Seenu. An ultra-weird name with an ultra-weird plot. I've mentioned the thankless plot too many times only because it is genuinely that bad. Before I go into it, I feel compelled to point out the good. Seenu talks to god. We hear the voice-overs of Ganesha, Krishna and Jesus. It's one of the funniest things in the movie. There are certain jokes related to films and actors that work. There's also one related to Chicken Peri-Peri. David Dhawan's typical absurdity shows spark intermittently but not enough to bring it all together.

Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav are the veterans of comedy supporting Beta Dhawan. They have a few amusing gags and quirks. Anupam Kher has a natural echo in his voice and Shukla gets to play the Bollywood version of Tio, the bell guy from Breaking Bad. Except this has nothing to do with Breaking Bad and is more like Breaking Oh So Bad, So Very Bad. The music of the film is highly catchy. My pick of the lot is Galat Baat Hai. Tera Hero Idhar Hai (reminiscent of Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai from Kaalia) and Shanivaar Raati (reminiscent of at least 3 Govinda songs) are also extremely fun. Ileana D'Cruz looks super hot in Besharmi Ki Height with those hand raising upward thrusts.

Actors - check. Director - check. Music - check. Script - a giant uncheck. It's no surprise how the lack of a good script plays a massive party pooper. I wouldn't like to mention the plot because apart from it wasting yours and my time, it is so bad that I wouldn't wish to relive it. I will briefly mention it for your sake, if it helps you decide whether to watch this film or not. In case you do watch the film, you will be better prepared.

It is the story Seenu who falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D' Cruz) who is force-dating Angad (Arunoday Singh). Seenu manages to save the girl from his clutches only to fall under the clutches of another girl, Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) who had fallen in love at first sight with him. Now Seenu decides to hitch Ayesha and Angad, so him and Sunaina can be free to say I Love You to one another. There is a lot of emphasis on these three words throughout the film for some juvenile reason. This plot is worse than it sounds, trust me. Then there is Nargis Fakhri, whose pout can turn magically shift the focus of the scene entirely to it and suck every possibility of cinematic life from it.

If there is a reason to watch this film, it is Varun Dhawan who fails to win you over but still manages to offer some respite. Main Tera Hero can be a good comedy at places but it's a poor film that ultimately crashes and burns under a plot that is an exercise in pointlessness of plot-less-ness. The film reaches several dead-ends and drags on before it decides to end. I hope your trip to the theater leads to a destination, at least.
