First thing first Kangana Ranaut should walk out of direction immediately. Her self obsession is more than evident in Manikarnika. Almost every five minutes she walks wide eyed grim or determined or angry looking into the camera. After a point you are almost bored of this repeated ritual and fear it occurring again.
The movie picks up well and has some well executed scenes and dialogoues, the intent of the movie producers to back the director is more than evident. The director however seemed more obsessed with her own acting capabilities and has completely ignored the essential backbone of a great movie – a well written screenplay.
The movie could have been a great chance to educate audiences on the uprising of 1857, Bollywood as such has made next to nothing movies in this genre and Kangana the director totally ruins it. Great actors like Danny, Kulhbhushan Kharbanda, Atul Kulkarni and Suresh Oberoi are reduced to being glorified extras.
The lack of screenplay is reflected in the pacing of the movie and till interval we only have Manikarnika’s life being established what could have been great war scenes filled epic freedom struggle movie is reduced to the levels of a TV Soap Opera shot with a better camera. Till interval the most impactful scene of the movie is what essentially is a simple saas-bahu fight.
You can pay this movie a visit if you are Kangana Ranaut fan because minus her acting and her ego as a director this movie is pure zilch.
One and a half star for some great production values and Kangana’s acting.
