Go ahead and see this film if you have not already seen it.
This is surely one of the better films in recent times. To call it a tearjerker may not be appropriate since there is no laboured attempt by the director to make you cry,and some of the situations themselves move you to tears.
This is a tense and well made hijack drama where flight attendant Neerja (Sonam) is on duty on a Mumbai New York flight which gets hijacked during the stopover at Karachi. How she faces the mental and physical torture by the hijackers while continuing to look after the passengers forms the major part of the film. Director Ram Madhvani has done a splendid job of recreating the entire incident realistically and has extracted superb performances from all artists specially from Sonam and Shabana Azmi. To establish the 70s Sonam's craze has been shown as yesterday's superstar Rajesh Khanna and there is a sprinkling of his songs and dialogue used by her to good effect. Some scenes towards the end are very touching indeed and will bring tears .
What could be called a highlight is the acting of Sonam. Her subtle underplayed performance is praise worthy. Not to be left behind veteran Shabana Azmi delivers a strong performance as usual. The actor playing the psychotic terrorist has acted very well.
