Imagine yourself staring at Photograph for 110 minutes. That exactly is how engrossing Photograph is. We keep coming across such cinema all the time which is positioned as “intelligent cinema” to us. Frankly this is a nothing movie. The promise of Ritesh Batra with The Lunch Box is all but lost with this one.
The plot did have promise a suffocated girl from a upper middle class coming into an evolving relationship with a do gooder but lower class photographer in a city like Mumbai where human sensitivity is usually the first thing crushed. It is the director’s lack of grip on the narrative and a screenplay that stand stills for minutes all together that kills the idea totally.
All important developments of the plot are delivered very unconvincingly – for example how does Molina ( Sanya Malhotra) agree to be Rafique’s girl friend just to keep his grand mother in good humour ?
The other problem of Photograph is the director’s obsession with body language and ignoring the complete visual point of a scene , for example at times you will see just the feet of characters sitting on a director’s table.
There are good things about Photograph too , performances of the three main characters, Nawazuddin ,Sanya and the lady who has played the grandmother have all put in rocking performances.
Then the movie ends abruptly like The Lunch Box , Batra’s previous attempt. At least Lunch Box had a gripping narrative and the movie had evolving relations.
Frankly if this is what intelligent cinema makers have to deliver then can we really blame the audiences that they patronize stuff like Total Dhamaal ?
