Let me start with a politically incorrect and largely open to ridicule statement by the purists. In my judgment Vikram Bhatt has done some good work in the past in the horror genre. !920 , in my book was watchable stuff. So was the original Raaz. It was a sleeper hit. Came out of nowhere and if you did not see What Lies Beneath , the one on which that one was based, it could scare you for sure. So in that sense Raaz 4 or Raaz Reboot or whatever that it was called did have a certain amount of audience anticipation. Must I also add that personally I liked the idea of the hero chanting hanuman chalisa in the ear's of the possessed leading lady in the climax of 1920. The third one though only written by Vikram Bhatt called Horror Story was also a good attempt. In short , after RGV, Vikram Bhatt knew how to deliver horror. All that reputation stands eroded with this one.

Vikram Bhatt has delivered comedy in the name of horror. Raaz sequels and the 1920 series barring 1920 london had some watchable moments at least. This one is a mishmash of all that Vikram Bhatt's previous attempts which worked at the BO. The climax of this one is hugely inspired from the 1920's climax mentioned above. With people taking turns to read the mantras from a sacred book because the chanting of the mantra should not break and the evil spirit suddenly shouting fuck you repeatedly at the hero had the audience laughing uncontrollably. The director probably thought he is attempting something different with a bhoot who speaks like a event manager and therefore totally losing the simple point that if we get comfortable with the spirit it will not really scare us.

To put it politely Kriti Kharbanda tries her best and in some scenes where she has to show hurt ,she does well. Gaurav Arora is average. Emran Hashmi only had to do what he has done a million times before play the misunderstood lover for a major part of the plot. You actually feel sorry for this man. For a major part of the 1970s it was a given that if Amitabh died in the climax it meant good money at the box office. So directors found new ways of killing the guy every time. At least then Salim-Javed were in peak form so while he did die a lot of time , it was different treatment all the time. Emran Hashmi has the bhatts and they frankly have limited story writing skills.

The biggest let down of Raaz 4 is its totally non existent screenplay. A 2 hour movie actually feels like a four hour boring boardroom presentation. This one actually has a song right in the middle of the climax.

One more point Vikram Bhatt seriously needs to get someone who can approve good music for him. Frankly I do not recall when was it that a Vikram Bhatt movie had one song that you could at least listen till it played.

My rating is largely for the respect I had for Vikram for making products like Raaz and 1920 the other half star is for the reasonably well made.Frankly if this was a debut director effort I would have given a zero.
