Saare jahan se Mehnga has a very interesting story line. A family which finds it difficult to make ends meet on a meagre salary decides to use a novel idea to beat inflation. They avail of a government loan to unemployed youth to buy provisions. Does the idea really work? Can they pull it off?
The idea as you can see is pretty unique and inherently funny. The scheme is at once simple and preposterous and the film could have exploited it much more. However, after a good start pre interval, it descends into melodrama in the second half which drags it down. The joke that everyone plays out finally could have been the highlight of the movie instead of which it winds down rather tamely with the story focusing on one family instead of on the larger picture which would have been far more hilarious.
It is a decent movie to watch because of the story idea. Also, the ensemble cast does a good job of portraying simple middle class people effectively and the locale etc has an authentic feel.
It definitely could have been zippier, funnier and more tightly told. However, itne paise mein itna hich milega. I think it's good to watch at a morning sasta show. After all, multiplex tickets these days almost need you to take a loan and this movie won't justify that. On the other hand, given the kind of movies I have been subjected to last few weeks (Race, Zilla, Jayantabhai), this one is a far more enjoyable watch. And yes, you can take the kids.
