Stanley Ka Dabba is an inspirational & an emotional drama about children and their tiffin box. It revolves around the protagonist Stanley, a school boy, his school life and how he rises against all odds.

“Amol Gupte charms once again! Stanley Ka Dabba has mentionable performances by the children and the teachers. It lacks a central theme but captures relatable experiences of a child. A must watch!”

I was curious to know what Amol Gupte would do with Stanley ka Dabba given the controversy surrounding his first project Taare Zameen PAr which became an Amir han movie.

Well, I think Taare Zameen Par came out a better movie due to Amirs involvement in it. It stuck to a definite storyline of how to deal with a dyslexic child. Stanley suffers because it lacks a central point. Sure, its about Stanley who does not get a dabba to school and is victimised by a teacher for this lame reason. The teacher himself is a greedy pig who eats up the kids dabbas. What I could not figure even after the movie was over was whether the movie is about Stanleys circumstances or about the bad teacher or about his good friends or about school life in general.

If it was just a kids movie we would have seen a bad step mother who wont give Stanley a dabba, a demonic teacher and really good buddies who help him. If it was a story about the quality of teachers and the psychological impact on kids of their nasty behaviour then the movie would have been again different. By offering us a mixed dabba where each box in the tiffin serves up a different cuisine, the movie dilutes its charm.

However, it is a movie made from the heart and it has some funny as well as tear leaking moments. Partho as Stanley is endearing and a natural as the brilliant child who wont talk about his troubles but spin a story about himself that makes his life more palatable. You really want to hug the child and give him a nice hot lunch. His gang of friends is also completely at home as the buddies who admire him and help him. Some of the teachers seem to be drawn from real life and they make a sharp contrast to the professionals- Divya Dutta, Raj Zutshi, and Divya Jagdale (who excels as the Science teacher). I dont think mixing professional and amateurs in similar roles works. Amol Gupte as the khadoos tiffin eating Hindi teacher actually evokes pity for his greed rather than loathing which I think is a failing, (but that is if it was the bad step mom movie). Here his character confused me specially because he is repentant of his behavior later.

In spite of the looseness of the script, some unduly long sequences and the vagueness of its purpose, the movie is entertaining. I dont think kids under 6 would enjoy this one too much but older kids and even adults will definitely identify with the characters and the scenarios in the movie. At 1.5 hours its also just the right duration to keep you involved. This dabba will fill your tummy for sure though it may not let you enjoy a satisfied burp at the end.
