Much has been said and spoken about the Arushi Talwar and Hemraj double murder case since 2008. A lot of media coverage, press reports, debates, politicization and drastic twists and turns have encircled this case with no clear conclusion.

14-year-old Arushi Talwar was found murdered in her bedroom in 2008. The prime suspect Hemraj, who was the house help at the Talwar's was also found dead. After the prima facie investigation, the UP Police held Arushi's parents responsible for the double murders. After the lack of clarity, the case was handed over to the CBI.

Due to the compromised crime scene in the primary investigation by the local police, CBI started their investigation all over again and came up with an altogether different conclusion. But this too was scrapped as a second CBI team was put to work to re-investigate the case adding to another twist in the tale.

Meghana Gulzar's Talvar is what can be termed as a documentary take on the film with no fictitious characters or incidences. Vishal Bharadwaj does a fabulous job by putting together both ends of the case and presenting a crisp and gritty script. The film is a clean take on the original murder case and the nature of investigations that continue to shape the case.

Where the film fails is where the illustrious star cast consisting of Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neeraj Kabi and Sohum Shah fails to deliver the power packed performances that justify the character and their potential as individual artists. Tabu's track as Irrfan's wife in the film seems like a forced addition for the sake of star value. The direction and editing of the film are rather lousy. You expect much more from actors like these. That's where the film becomes all grit no soul. The film lacks emotion and the impact of the incident, what could have otherwise been a worthy watch.

Except for a few little flaws, Talvar has a not so sharp edge to keep you seated through the 2 hours and some more odd minutes!
