The Dirty Picture is set against the colorful and entertaining backdrop of the South film industry of the 80s. The quintessential siren, Silk, knew her audiences, and it didn't seem like anything would stop the fiercely ambitious starlet, till it did, in the shape of unrequited love. A scorching trailer, a hit song, a sexy actress; Ekta Kapoors, The Dirty Picture hits the screens this weekend with director Milan Luthria of Once upon a time in Mumbaai fame at the helm of affairs. It promises to be bold, wild and push the limit but is this movie dirty enough to make you go Ooh la la?
As Amitabh has Agneepath, Sanjay Dutt has Vaasatv, Vidya has THE DIRTY PICTURE !!!

Set in the 80s, the film is an unofficial biopic based on the life of the sultry siren of the days, Silk Smitha. The story is about how a simple girl with loads of attitude and self belief makes her way up the ladder of success, albeit attracting the criticism & disgust of the elite. She goes from a struggling dancer to a seductress whose mere song in a film sends the cash registers ringing. It is the story of a nation of prudes, and a misunderstood fiery personality in Silk(Vidya Balan). Add to that an unabashedly flesh loving south Indian superstar(Nasserudin Shah), his meek Silk-loving brother(Tusshar) & a critically accliaimed, box-office failed filmmaker Abraham(Emraan Hashmi) who hates her.

The first half is absolutely brilliant and the interval point comes in with one of the best scenes of the film. The second half dips a bit towards the end but the war is already won by then. 10 min trimming would have made this almost perfect.

The music is all about Ooh La la which is fantastically picturized. Also a foot-tapping south number Nakka Mukka will warrant whistles. Ishq Sufiana too is great.

The unsaid star of this film, maybe just as big as Vidya, is the writer Rajat Aroraa. With some heart wrenching scenes and whistle-worthy dialogues, he brings back the dialogue-baazi of the 70s & 80s and deserves top credit for the same.

Of the starcast Naseerudin Shah is in top form and makes you hate his unapologetically sinister character. Emraan Hashmi too is superb and delivers what I think is his best and most underplayed performance to date.

But the backbone, heart & the soul of the film is VIDYA BALAN. She courageously sheds her inhibitions in a portrayal so bold that no other A-list actress would dare to venture close to. Not only is it bold but also equally convincing as she transforms into Silk and delivers one of the most stellar performances by a female lead.

Director Milan Luthria succeeds once more in taking us back in time to the masala films of the yore. He has a distinct style and loves to play to the gallery, but we dont mind as long there's content to back him. He and write Rajat Arora are a lethal combination.

Kudos to Ekta Kapoor as she amazes yet again in bringing us a different, entertaining film with a lot of character. Her films keep getting better and one awaits her future work.

As for the movie, this is a MUST WATCH. Its distinct, retro, pulp and yes...Sexy. For those who think theres only sleaze on show here, its not. Behind the gaudy exterior rests a tragic story which makes for one of the best films of this year.

P.S - Watch it at a single screen to have a real experience !!!
