“Youngistaan fails at both politics and romance due to bad lead performances and an unrealistic story. We're left to wonder why Farooq Sheikh signed up for this movie. ”
Disclaimer : The box office number indicates the approximate lifetime earnings of a film in India. Although it has been collated by extensive secondary research/ resources, we don’t guarantee its accuracy and assume no liability or responsibility for any errors or omissions. However it is sufficiently indicative but not exact figures of the box office performance of a film since release.
This film deserves two stars but for the interesting development of an offbeat story idea I will give it 3 stars.
The story is about a 28 year old Indian ( Jackky) who is a software games developer in Japan and is enjoying life to the hilt while in a live in relationship with a pretty Indian girl ( Neha Sharma). Their love life takes a shock when Jackky's father who is the Prime Minister of India falls seriously ill, and Jackky has to come back to India with Neha in tow. Very soon his father dies and Jackky is selected by the ruling party to take over the Prime minister's job. Following options do come up ---
A. Does Jackky take up the PM's job even though he is a novice in politics?
B. Does he continue his live in relationship with Neha and does she live with him at the PM's official residence?
C. How does Jackky cope with all these developments?
Now for the answers . Our young friend not only becomes the PM, he does a wonderful job, puts up intelligent arguments albeit in favour of youth and is called a good boy by the finance minister. He speaks of great responsibility coming with great power just like spiderman had said. He follows up on some important matters initiated by his late father. His pretty girl friend moves in with him ,but feels neglected since the PM cannot give her much time .She finally reconciles. they continue to live together and horror of horrors, she gets pregnant.
So we have a very tricky situation of sorts with a novice young PM of this highly orthodox country living with a pregnant girlfriend. It is to his credit that the PM smiles his way through this crisis overseen and advised by his PA uncle Akbar ( Farooque Sheikh) who had also served his father.
In an interesting scene Farooque recalls the song " Kuch to log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kahna" to console Jackky on the national gossip on the pregnant girl friend In another interesting scene the PM's pregnant girlfriend wants to eat kulfi ice cream at 4AM. How the bodyguard arranges this is worth seeing. (To justify the PM's live in style,we have a villager's wife telling her husband that he also goes to other women on his pay day. So what if the PM has a girlfriend, this has nothing to do with his performance as PM.)
The director Syed Ahmad Fazal must be praised for the cool way he has handled all these situations without making it boring. Whether we agree or disagree with what is unfolded on the screen it makes for reasonably interesting viewing. This movie has to be seen with the backdrop of the marital problems and romantic escapades of some leaders of Western countries in the recent past, (It may be recalled that a head of a European state bringing his girlfriend on state visit created quite a problem some time back.) So we need to be open minded with this scenario. It might be a reality soon. In political parlance it could form a " What if analysis" specially when in reality we have young PM in waiting
As the young PM and his cute girlfriend both Jackky and Neha Sharma are good and show fine chemistry. They have underplayed wherever required. Both have done justice to the scenes. Farooque Sheikh is excellent as usual in the dignified and sober role of PA Akbar. He will be missed a lot.
The music and technical qualities are good. The song shot at the Taj Mahal has a nice feel to it.
