The official remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1973 hit Zanjeer. Vijay is a brutally honest police officer who has been transferred yet again by the system for chasing the corrupt underworld goons. Verdict

“Zanjeer is a well-paced masala remake but a lukewarm debut for Ram Charan which doesn't match up to the intensity of the original film. None of the performances ring true, apart from Sanjay Dutt's strong acting. Skip it.”

Plot :  Vijay Khanna (Ram Charan Teja)  makes his action entry against the background  music of raghupati raghav raja ram. Why?! There is also a camera tilt down from a Chiranjeevi poster for added effect.  He gets transferred to Mumbai after slapping a politician in Hyderabad.  The case related to death of a government official leads him to clash with Teja (Prakash Raj) and also brings in love in his life in the form of the solo witness Maya (Priyanka Chopra).  Oh, there is a revenge angle also but that’s left ignored until the end.

Review :  Based on the oil mafia story that  was in the news after journalist J.Dey’s death  Zanjeer is another addition to the recent craze of making 80’s wala masala entertainer. Even if I don’t compare it to the original it fails as a standalone film. It takes itself too seriously, offers nothing novel and does not even deliver an engaging drama. All the characters are caricatured and sometimes look like spoof of the original.   Now, six films old Apoorva Lakhia has not yet made a single good film so nothing was expected from him but this masala film genre is clearly not his territory.  Films like these also need some conviction and he clearly lacks that. A fine example  of that is Rohit Shetty. Ram Charan Teja picks a wrong film to make his Hindi debut.  Just seeing him mouth the iconic line from the original is cringe worthy.  To add to the woes is Sanjay Dutt playing a tired and lethargic looking Sher Khan.   Atul Kulkarni hams it as the J.Dey like character. Then there is the highly irritating Priyanka Chopra playing a dumb bubbly NRI . The final tiring nail in the coffin is Prakash Raj. I am so tired of watching him do the same thing again and again that to see through his performance these days is a pain.   Filled with such bad casting, bad writing and insipid direction there is nothing  good which saves the film.

Word of mouth – Zanjeer is a remake disaster.
