Verdict - A.R. Murugadoss once again churns out a racy action thriller but with a little more grimness that may be hard to digest for many...
When the movie is helmed by the maker of classic thriller movies like Ghajini & Holiday, then the speculations & curiosity levels are obviously high. Further, as it is evident from the trailers & posters that this movie is a women centric movie in which the lead female protagonist will be seen doing terrific action scenes, then obviously the audience will gravitate to see this movie as this is the era of feminism & #Me Too movement, in which finally the filmmakers, writers, artists, & the repressed woman are shedding light on the atrocities committed against women.
But, as a film critic & audience, I personally liked Akira due to two reasons-
• The beautifully crafted screenplay & storyline and the highly engaging and intelligent direction;
• The amount of effort & dedication with which Sonakshi Sinha plays this challenging character thereby shutting up the critics who considered her to be just good enough for playing the hero’s loves interest;
Now, no doubt that the movie consists of three different sub-plots that are interwoven together with brilliance that is difficult to praise, but the second half consists of some scenes that are hard to digest for major section of the north-Indian audience as we have grown up watching candy floss romantic movies and tearjerkers. Further, the end of the movie is perplexing as it portrays Akira as the victim instead of a rebel who finally gains acceptance, justice, and praise from the society. But, the movie is so fast-paced and well-acted that the harsh & hard hitting realities behind the innocent citizen getting sucked up in the crime world due to the mistakes committed by corrupt police and the incompetence of the law and order system that gets paralyzed in front of the communal violence & mob activities, seem to be highly gripping and even eye-opening.
Overall, Akira entertains us with some good action scenes that are maybe for the first time performed by a woman instead of a muscular & tall hero and also makes us aware of the dark side of the society in which we live. This is surely a thriller worth giving a shot and interestingly this new wave of cinema has not only made socially relevant movies, biopics, and small town stories a big hit among the masses, but it has also elevated the genre of thrillers to be the first choice among the youth as this country is young, and the hard working young professionals definitely need some cheap thrills for entertainment.
