Verdict - Anurag Kashyap shines in this otherwise generic thriller.

Akira follows the recent crop of no-nonsense thrillers like NH10 and Neerja which eschew the usual song and dance routine and comic routines, and for a change give us badass female characters kicking plenty of butt. That, however, doesn't alone make for compelling filmmaking. Director AR Murugadoss does little to make it work on the thriller front - this is an extremely generic film with an interesting speck of an idea. But in a surprise acting turn, Anurag Kashyap completely chews up the scenery, playing the chief antagonist. In a very clever casting decision, Kashyap plays a bad cop of the variety that can often be found in his own films, and gamely mocks his own persona. He delivers his lines with relish, is always seen wearing glares in a character that's a personification of the mustachioed violent Indian male type, smokes right in front of a No Smoking signboard at the police station and is often seen chilling in a room whose walls carry posters of Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam, The Dirty Picture and even Dev.D. I found the film mostly disposable, but I wanted to clap everytime Kashyap was on screen. As someone who's been disgruntled by most of his recent directorial outings, I was amused to discover that his best turn in years was an acting gig.
