Ashwini Iyer Tiwari who gave us the excellent Nil Battey Sannata now delivers another great movie in the totally delightful Bareilly ki Barfi.

Set in small town Bareilly, the story follows the romance of young Chirag Dubey. He is jilted by his girlfriend and in his angst, he pens a novel - Bareilly ki Barfi which is about this very 'bindaas 'kind of girl who smokes and drinks and behaves totally atypically to how "good" girls behave. The book is read by chance by Bitti who is amazed that the character in the book is exactly like her. She has been rejected by numerous suitors for not being the gharelu types. Her delight at finding that the author admires a woman like her makes her want to meet him. Small twist, Chirag Dubey has bullied his wimpy friend Pritam Vidrohi in being named the author of the book and published it in his name with his photo. Now, BItti must meet Pritam and not like him so that Chirag can tell her his true feelings. I won't get into details. They are not something you may not be able to predict yourself, but id' rather you watch them unfold on screen.

The Director gives us a slice of life in a small town and you start feeling at home with the characters right away. Their personalities are not a given and undergo changes that seem real. Chirag is a stud who becomes sentimental and then nasty as a man in love. Pritam is a wimp who rebels. But all of this happens naturally and doesn't seem forced. People behave irrationally and this movie shows that beautifully.

Ashwini also bring out a feminist agenda with Bitti's character and the dismay she feels at the state of things. Bitti is fed up of being asked if she is a virgin by guys her parents get her to meet. Her mother is stressed that she is getting rejected but her dad supports her at every turn. They share a smoke together and all he does when she turns up late at night is to sniff the air to see if she has had too much to drink. I think you need movies to show dads like these to turn out strong confident women who are not afraid to be who they are, especially if that goes against accepted social norms. The best part is that this is not a sloganeering message but a theme that runs through the movie subtly, conveying it more strongly than a flag waving march would have done.

This is not a hero-heroine movie and need the whole cast to come together to make it work, and they step up to the task admirably. Ayushman Khurana and Rajkummar Rao have shown us their acting prowess before and their portrayals of Chirag and Pritam are spot on. Kriti Sanon as Bitti has a meaty role to bite into here and I enjoyed watching her. She is attractive but also intelligent and sorted and her Bitti makes you root for her throughout. Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Bhargava as Bitti's parents hit the right note as the progressive yet worried parents of a daughter they have tried to bring up right.

This is a movie worth watching. The romance is real, the characters are believable and the story is well-paced and totally engrossing. It's two hours of your time well spent. Can take kids also. Barell ki Barfi leaves a sweet, lingering taste in your mouth.
