Verdict - A hugely dramatic movie that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.

Beyond the Clouds is a classic roller-coaster ride, taking you on emotional highs and then mud-scraping lows.

The movie set in Mumbai follows the story of two siblings Aamir and Taara. Orphaned in their childhood, they have only each other. Aamir is a petty drug dealer and Tara works at Dhobi Ghat. Aamir hides a drug packet with Taara while being chased by cops. When she goes to retrieve it from her sort of boss Akshi with whom she has hidden it, he tries to rape her. In self-defence, she hits him and grievously injures him. He goes to the hospital, she goes to jail where she will have to stay till he gets better and says she was not responsible for his injury. Aamir is left to look after Akshi since Taara's freedom depends on his speaking up. The story picks up from here and I will not spoil it for you by giving you any further details. I will leave you to experience each high and low for yourself.

The movie at its heart is about humanity, redemption and the simple ties that can bind people unknown to each other. We are all good, to begin with, our circumstances mould us. When life throws up challenges, whether you let your innate goodness surface and take control, or you let powerful negative emotions such as anger or greed sweep you away into a never-ending downward spiral is what the movie questions and brings forth.

Ishaan Khatter is the anchor of the movie and what a solid debut this is. His body language does half the work for him and his endearing smile and expressions do the rest. Ishan is vulnerable and endearing and will win your heart. Here's wishing him a long and illustrious movie career. Malavika Mohan as Taara has lesser screen time. She is very good but somehow Ishan steals the show from her. The other family that joins them - GV Sharada as Akshi's mother 'pati' and the young girls Tanisha and Asha speak largely with their eyes and give the movie its touch of innocence, vulnerability and steadfastness.

The movie has some scenes with a lot of screaming and sobbing which you may think are too over the top and could have been less melodramatic but when you consider the story that is being played out you are ok with that too. You find yourself holding your breath at moments and shaking you thread in disbelief at certain points. Every part of this movie - the screenplay, dialogues, photography - work in perfect unison to give us characters that move you deeply. There are so many tiny moments that will stay with you long after and make you smile or weep, and that is what is wonderful about this movie.

The human spirit in this film dips and soars in a freewheeling fashion with each circumstance, but always seeks a way out, beyond the clouds that blur the horizon. And at each point, it takes you along with it, heart in your mouth as you ride on its back and look down at the beauty and love that sparkle like jewels even within the grimy dust heap of Mumbai.
