Verdict - Funny in bits with some good performances. But a lackluster approach towards love and poor chemistry between the leading pair make this an average rom-com

Ek Main Aur Ekk TuWatch trailerRelease date : February 10, 2012

Both Bollywood and Hollywood have a very aesthetic albeit distinct definitions of love. So where they have white weddings, we have karwa chauths; where they have Christmases, we have Diwalis. And so on and so forth. Frothy rom-coms is a genre that has very easily crept into our sacrificial dramedy kind of love. Sometimes this bastardization results in a jackpot and sometimes not so much. In the case of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, its an even-steven situation.

Crudely put, EMAET is a rehash of What Happens In Vegas and Jab We Met. A chance encounter between a square architect Rahul (Imraan Khan) and free-spirited hair stylist Riana (Kareena Kapoor) leads to a night of drunken madness ending in a wedding that must be annulled. They have 14 days till the final annulment in which time they prance across Vegas and Mumbai with one eventually falling in love with the other.

The story has nothing new but a contemporary screenplay and quirky dialogues make up for it. Some of the scenes are hilarious and clearly work in the desi setting. However the crucial scenes which take the story from one mode to the other are either done away with in the form of song or quickly paced over with some raw emotion and poor execution.

Imraan Khan is tailor-made for the stiff South Bombay NRI and displays a reserved charm. Kareena Kapoor reprises Geet from Jab We Met but her Rianna lacks the child-like innocuousness of Geet even though Kareena manages to shine nonetheless. But then again she always is larger than life. Ratna Pathak as Imraan's uppity socialite mother is funny and Kareena's Braganza family provides the much needed warmth in a film that clearly fails to sizzle without some much needed chemistry between the leading pair.

Shakun Batra as the director of the film must be applauded as she has managed to add some sparkle to an otherwise redundant concept. Even though the film manages to challenge certain conventions and conclusions, the director never takes the film to its full potential and this lackluster approach towards love works against the film.

Do I recommend it? Well keeping in mind the festivity of Valentine's around the corner, this film keeps you just on the brink. Neither does it reproduce the headiness of romance nor does it provide hope to the lonely hearts. At best, it leaves you with a confused smile on your face. 2 and 3/4 stars.
